Using Repetition in Your Layouts
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS2 with Mac OS X.
Repetition, or rhythm, is one of the basic design elements that can really take your layouts to another level in a snap. The idea is that the visual information is organized and unified by a repeating image. The end result is a cohesive layout that is pleasing to the eye. There are endless ways to use repetition and I will show you just a few here to scratch the surface.

This layout shows the repetition of a background pattern, used as a brush, to overlap the photo. The use of the color purple in the background, the ribbon and the vellum in the frame, is also helping to unify all of the elements of the layout.

In this layout, I scattered the leaves along the side to form a border and then tied the theme in by using two more on the corner of the picture frame. There is also a bit of color repetition in the green of the leaves and the label beneath the frame.

In the example above, the color red is repeated throughout the layout. I was careful not to use too much red and used a neutral background to really make the red pop out. The word “Red” in the title also helps to tie it all together. The neutral color of the background is also repeated in the postage frame on top of the photos.

In this example, there are a few repeating elements. The first and most obvious is the set of three photos of the same size and subject. A set of repeating photos of the same person posing differently is a great example. I’ve also used the same rusted style on the swirls and the photo turns. The color brown is used in four different places: the rusted elements, the photo mats, the script writing in the background paper and the alpha used to spell the word, “roses.”
This design rule can be applied to any of the elements you use on a daily basis. Think outside the box with it. A few more examples include repeating embellishments, alphas, textures etc. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the effect it can have on your digital scrapbooking layouts.
