Scanning Art with the Flip-Pal Scanner
Article written using Adobe Photoshop CS6 with Windows 7
Several years ago, I cleaned out a large box in my closet filled with the kids' school projects that were too big for my file cabinet. These items were also too big for my scanner, so I took digital photos of them and recycled them. While I have been delighted with the extra closet space over the years, there is a little heavy spot in my heart that wishes I'd waited for a better way to preserve a few of those projects. My husband has a stash of artwork in his closet which our kids gave him as gifts. Some of it hangs on the wall, but most of it is in a thick stack.
Good news! Technology has finally caught up with what we need to conquer the boxes of kid art! I used the Flip-Pal scanner and its stitch feature to preserve this art for my digital scrapbook pages. Let me show you how I tackled the task.
First, I scanned most of the items while they were placed flat on a table, but I also scanned some art that was hanging on the wall. When scanning a large page that will need stitching, you will need to overlap the scans one inch so the Flip-Pal software, which runs from the SD card, can easily match up the pieces.
After you have scanned the entire piece of art, remove the SD card from the scanner, and load it in the computer. Open the Flip-Pal Tool Box, choose "Stitch Scans" and select the files to stitch. When you have them selected, click "Open," and the software goes to work. How fast it goes depends on the resolution you choose and the number of scans you are working with.
When it is finished, your image will be saved on the SD card and a preview of your stitched image will load. I move the stitched images to my hard drive so they are easy to access and use in my scrapbook pages.
The Flip-Pal scanner just might help you save some closet space – but best of all, it will help you preserve the creations of the budding artists in your family.
Check out the Flip-Pal scanner in the Scrap Girls Boutique!
