Tips On Embossing
Article written using Photoshop CS5 on a Mac
I chose Angela Blanchard's Subtropical Collection, with its brilliantly colored insects and flowers, to demonstrate a technique that I have found to be quite useful. Because the praying mantis on Nick's shoulder is so small, I decided to enlarge the photograph in order to capture that delightful moment of tenderness. Not wanting to distract from the photo, I felt I needed to minimize the title. An embossed title, using the Horizontal Type Mask Tool, was just the answer. In five easy steps, you too can create an elevated title that will rise off the paper as if embossed.
First, duplicate the paper that you want to emboss. Then with the top layer selected, go to the Type Tool button and select the Horizontal Type Mask Tool (a hollow T with dotted lines). Use a bold or chunky font such as Cooper Std.
Next, type the word you want embossed in the final position in the layout. It will appear hollow. Go to Select> Inverse and press Delete. Only the word will remain on the top layer.
Open the Layer Style Dialogue Box and create a bevel. Experiment with the different options, adjusting the size and depth of the bevel. Remember to change the shadow color to suit the colors you are using.

If you look closely, you will see that I have used this technique on the photograph as well. The raised circle gives the illusion of a magnifying glass while drawing the eye, every so subtly, to the praying mantis.
Embossing is such a simple technique and yet seldom utilized. I hope this tutorial will give you incentive to experiment with the different effects that can be achieved while using this tip. And as always, remember to share your results in the Scrap Girls Gallery!
