Extracting the Easy Way
Extracting is when you remove a subject from its background, such as removing a child, a sign, a flower, yourself, etc. In general, we extract something that we want to focus on or draw attention to. Extracting is such a great technique because it allows us as digital scrappers to create an out-of-box effect, to place our subject onto another layer or to enhance our subject perhaps by placing it in color on a black-and-white background.
I love extracting because I like to highlight my subjects, and I find it easier to do so if I have a clean extraction. Today, I'm going to share the way that I do it. Maybe you do extracting differently. Or maybe it's something you have tried before. The way I'm going to show you is so easy, so if you haven't ever done an extraction, now is a great time to give it a try!
First, choose a photo with a subject that can be cleanly extracted. I have chosen this photo of my youngest son as he is about to swing around that pole.
I want to extract him out so I can play with the background a bit. The first thing I need to do is duplicate my original. Using the Copy layer, I now add a Stroke from the Effects Palette. I start with 10 and the black default. Next, I click on the fx symbol and change the stroke to something that is completely different from any color in my photo. For this example, I have chosen a bright purple.
Turning off my original layer (by clicking on the Eye icon), I select the Eraser Tool and start erasing away from the image I want to extract. In this case, I want to keep my son, Callan, so I draw a rough outline around him. You can see that the purple is like a border around him, showing where I have erased.
Change the size of the stroke and/or eraser as necessary as you zoom in and out of the photo. You will see any areas you have missed are outlined in the stroke color and are easy to spot (especially useful if you want to add a shadow!), and it is easier on the eye to have a contrasting color.
When you are finished extracting the part of the photo you want to keep, turn off the stroke from the photo layer. Finally, add your background and make whatever changes you wish to either the background or the extraction.
I hope this encourages you to try my Easy Extraction technique, it really does make such a difference! I look forward to seeing what YOU create using extractions, so be sure to post them in the Gallery so we can all admire them!
