Layer Masks - A Quick Way to Trim Papers
Article written using Adobe Photoshop CS6 with Windows 7
When I got my first look at the contents of this month's Scrap Girls Club, I was excited to write a tutorial using it. I love the colors, the variety of patterned papers, the beautiful flowers and the romantic word art. I chose to create a digital scrapbook page about my parents who were married for 50 years and adored each other.
While creating my page, I used pennant banners as a border between solid and patterned background papers. I trimmed the red solid paper with a layer mask so it would stop at the edge of border, allowing the patterned paper to show. In this tutorial, I will show you how to quickly trim a piece of digital scrapbook paper using a layer mask.
Layer masks are simple to create. First, select the paper layer you would like to trim. It needs to be the active layer in the Layers Palette. The active layer is highlighted in blue. With your paper layer active, create a layer mask by clicking on the "New Layer Mask" icon that looks like a white circle in a gray rectangle. The layer mask will show as a white square next to your layer thumbnail.
Now that you have created your layer mask, set the background color to white and the foreground color to black. Using the keyboard shortcut "D" is a fast way to do this. If your foreground and background colors are the opposite of what is shown in the screen shot below, use the keyboard shortcut "X" to swap your foreground and background colors.
When you work with layer masks, remember that white adds and black subtracts. A solid white layer mask will show the whole layer. A solid black layer mask will hide the entire layer. With the mask layer (the white square) selected, use a large round brush with a hard edge to paint away the excess paper. If you find you're painting black on your paper, you probably have the paper rather than its mask selected. When you are done, you can see the black and white areas on the mask in the layers panel. While I could have used an eraser and simply erased the red paper to get the same effect, the layer mask leaves the original paper unchanged. With a layer mask, if I find I erased too much or decide to move things around later (which I did while creating this layout,) it is easy to alter the layer mask by painting with white to add areas of the paper back in.
Try using a layer mask to trim a paper or embellishment on one of your next digital scrapbooking layouts. When you create a layout or project using the Scrap Girls Monthly Club, post it in the Scrap Girls Club Members section of the Gallery and your layout could be chosen as a Club Concepts Winner!
