Make Your Own Blinkie!
The Scrap Girls Message Board is full of cute blinkies! They adorn blogs, Facebook, Tumblr, and can be seen all over the World Wide Web! Have you ever wanted to make your own? I know I have, so I thought it was time to jump in and create one!
First, start out with a 300-pixel wide by 100-pixel tall transparent document with a resolution of 72. Once you are finished, you will be resizing this down to 150-pixel wide by 50-pixel tall, but we are creating it at a larger size so that it is easier to see.
Now, it’s time to decorate your blinkie. Treat it like a scrapbook page or card. Use your cute digital scrapbooking kits to create something fun! I used Monster Mash Collection Mini.
I resized my background paper to 25 percent so the pattern wouldn’t be huge on my blinkie. You will find that you need to resize your embellishments as well, and it makes it much easier if you resize them before dragging them over to your blinkie.
You can have several elements that are animated on your blinkie, just make sure they each have their own layer.
Once you are finished designing, go up to your Menu bar and select Window> Animation.
The Animation window will pop up at the bottom of your Photoshop window, and you will see the first frame of your blinkie. If you see bars instead, make sure to select your background or Layer 1 in your Layers Palette.
In your Layers Palette, turn off any of the layers that you don’t want to show up in the first frame by clicking on the Eye icon next to it. Notice that I turned off the Happy Halloween layer in my first frame.
Now, click on the Duplicate Selected Frames icon at the bottom of the Animation window (see image below). This will create a duplicate of the frame you just completed. Now, making sure the new frame is selected, turn off any layers you don’t want to show up in the frame.
Continue duplicating frames and turning on and off layers until your frames are complete.
Next, set the animation to play continuously by selecting Forever at the bottom of the Animation window.
Next, set the frame delay for each frame. If you want a fast-blinking action, select No Delay or 0.1; for text, it’s best to set it at a longer delay, say 1.0 or 1.5, depending on the length of your text.
Now’s the fun part! Time to play the animation! Click on the Play button at the bottom of the Animation window to preview your new blinkie. This will give you an idea if you need to adjust the Delay.
Click on Stop when you are done; the Stop command is located where the Play button was.
Now, it’s time to save your blinkie! Go to the Menu bar at the top of your Photoshop window. Select File> Save for Web & Devices. A window will pop up. Make sure to select GIF and change the size at the bottom to 150 wide by 50 high. Click Save.
Next, click Preview at the bottom of the window.
Another window will pop up, and you will see a preview of your saved blinkie. How cool is that?!
One last step: Your blinkie needs to be hosted somewhere like Photobucket. It’s free and easy to use. Sign in and press the Upload Now button.
Next, click on the Select Photos and Videos button, then find your blinkie on your computer. Click Open.
After your image finishes uploading, you will be able to view your blinkie and multiple linking options. To add your blinkie to a Message Board or Forum, use the IMG code.
Copy and paste this code into your Signature in your Profile settings.
Congratulations! You have created your first blinkie! Just think of all the fun you can have! How cool would it be to have a new blinkie for each season?
I hope to see some new blinkies in the Scrap Girls Forum soon!
Happy blinkie creating!

Adding a Style to Your Word Art
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Windows Vista
Scrap Girls has an amazing array of beautiful and creative word art ready to use. Word art is available as part of collections or can be purchased alone. The wonderful thing about word art is that it can be used as it is, or you can make adjustments to it to suit your specific layout.
Let me show you one very simple thing you can do to word art to make it extra unique for your special digital scrapbooking layout.
I love the clean simple Word Art from Cherise Oleson’s Trunk or Treat Collection. I have decided, though, that I wanted a little bit more of an emphasis on the word Halloween. I’m going to add a style to just the word Halloween to make it stand out. Here is my layout prior to adding a style to the wordart.

The process is really very simple. First, get out your Magic Wand Tool. In your Tool Palette, this tool is near the top and looks like, well, a magic wand! Then, make the word art layer in your Layers Palette active by clicking on it.
Next, select the color you wish to emphasize in the word art, and click on it with the Magic Wand Tool. In this case, I am selecting for the color black. "Contiguous" is not checked. The word Halloween is now within the “marching ants.”
While still on the word art layer and with the marching ants active, simply hit the key command Ctrl + J. Everything within the marching ants is now on a new layer directly above the word art layer.
Now that the word Halloween is on its own layer, simply add a style to make it really stand out. Here, I added Amanda Fraijo-Tobin’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Label Maker 6401. You can choose any style you like! You can add glitter, texture, gloss, or any one of many styles available to suit your whim. As you can see, it’s very easy to add a style to your digital scrapbooking word art to make it extra special and unique.
Have fun playing with your word art and styles!
