Online Backup Services
My heart sank, and I felt the sting of tears streaming down my face as I realized all my files were gone! I frantically searched my computer looking for any sign of hope, shaking my head trying to wake up out of what had to be a nightmare.
Sound familiar? Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling when you realized that your hard drive or External Hard Drive (EHD) had crashed? Were you one of the lucky ones who had backups of all your files on another EHD or on DVDs. Or was it on your to-do list? It can't be stressed enough how important it is to backup your files, but it can be such a time-consuming and daunting task. It's easy to put it off and say you will get to it tomorrow or the next day. Like so many of you, I am stretched to the limits of available time, so after trying a myriad of different strategies for backing up, I finally hit upon something that really works for me.
I know Ro, our fearless Scrap Girls CEO, has stressed the importance of a “triple threat,” not just having a single backup copy, but two, so that you have three copies of all your important files.
For instance, I have the following:
Let's talk about a few online backup services:
This service was easy to install and was backing up my files in minutes! One of the best things about this company is that it features unlimited storage. I was using Mozy before, and they changed their pricing structure so much that it priced them right out of my budget. I have been so happy with this service, I totally forget it's running on my computer!
I have heard good things about Carbonite. The biggest drawback is that they do not offer backups of your EHDs, which is something I can't live without. But if you don't have any EHDs, they are worth looking into.
Pricing and information for the MozyHome Plan:
I had trouble installing Mozy on my Mac when I switched over from a PC, and when I contacted customer support and followed the instructions they gave me, it still did not work. It was around that time that they changed the pricing structure, so I cancelled my account and signed up with Backblaze.
Keep in mind that these online backup services are not meant to be an additional storage system. My point is, if you delete the files off your computer, these companies will delete those same files after 30 days.
You might want to try out the free trials from these companies and get a feel for each one before deciding. I just love the peace of mind having an online backup service affords me!

Tips for Taking Photos of Fireworks
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7
Labor Day is just around the corner, and communities around the country are planning fireworks displays. Is your idea of photographing fireworks simply pointing the camera to the sky, clicking the shutter, and hoping for the best? That was my plan for many years. However, this method only got me blurry photos and photos of a blank sky with the best shots being merely mediocre.
I have a point-and-shoot camera. This year, I am determined to get some good fireworks photos even if I don't have an expensive DSLR. I did a little research and found a few tips.
Bring your supplies. You'll need a light to see your camera, maybe some extra batteries and memory card, and bug spray!
Go early. Scope out a location with a good view, free from obstructions, and preferably upwind from the launch site. You want a spot where the fireworks will be in front of you, not overhead.
Use the Fireworks Scene mode. Most point-and-shoot cameras have this option. This mode is preset for the best aperture (depth of field) and shutter speed to capture fireworks. If your camera doesn't have a fireworks mode, put it in Landscape mode. This will keep both near and far objects in focus. Be sure to turn off the flash. Turning your flash off will let the camera know that it only has available light to take a picture. The camera will then keep the shutter open long enough to capture the fireworks.
Use a tripod. The longer the shutter is open, the more susceptible your photo is to motion blur. Using a tripod will ensure there’s no movement.
Compose your shots. Portrait orientation is best for vertical displays, although you may want to switch to landscape for the finale. Practice a few shots during daylight, checking to be sure your horizon is level. Look for landmarks that you may or may not want to include.
Take your shot. Listen for the sound of the shells going up, and gently press the shutter release just before they burst. If you have one, use a remote release to prevent camera shake.
With a bit of planning and a bit of know-how, you can take great fireworks photos with a point-and-shoot camera. In the layout below, you can see how this technique worked well at the Fourth of July celebration. Now that I know how to ensure good fireworks photos, I’m ready for Labor Day!
