Who's with me in thinking I got the luck of the draw here? I get to write about almost everybody's favorite digital scrapbooking supply – embellishments! Embellishments are to a layout what accessories are to a woman. That's to say, they're not strictly necessary, but make the ensemble a whole lot more eye-pleasing, not to mention fun!
Embellishments can be clean, neat, and graphic in style, or can follow one of the hottest trends and show up in amazingly beautiful clusters of several embellishments in a group. One main key to creating an effective cluster is to use variety. Vary the size, the texture, and the type of embellishments within the cluster.
When applying a shadow, keep in mind what kind of shadow a three-dimensional item would make and let that be your guide. For instance, a piece of paper casts a smaller shadow than does a thick button. This kind of thinking will make your cluster look much more realistic.
Stars are the repeating embellishment in this cluster and are present in varying sizes and colors. Some items are smooth; some are rough. There is velvety ribbon, metal fence wire, a sliver of mica, and even a sprinkle of grungy glitter.
Now pull out your stash and see what fun embellishment clusters you can create! Don't forget to share your projects in the Scrap Girls Gallery!

Finding the Five Best Qualities
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows XP
Do you have a great photo without a story to accompany it? Or maybe you have a series of photos that you want to use in a scrapbook page, but don't feel you have enough information or space on your layout to write meaningful journaling. Making a short list of your subject's best qualities and using that list instead of traditional journaling can be a quick and thoughtful way to tell a story.
I found a series of photos of me with my siblings when I was one year old. While my parents didn't take very many photos of us as children, my mother did take the time to write things down and save them in our scrapbooks. While I was looking through my childhood scrapbooks, I found a page my family wrote listing my best qualities as a baby. The date on the page is just a few months earlier than those on the photos, so I decided the list would work well with them on a digital scrapbook page.
I wanted to include my mother's handwriting, so I scanned the list and used the Marquis and Move Tools to digitally cut strips from the image to use on my page. Let me show you how to do this.
After scanning your image, make a selection around the journaling with the Marquis Tool. Then switch to the Move Tool and drag the selected area into your page. Repeat the process for each line.
When you add drop shadows, it makes the strips look like they are cut out of the paper, but the entire page is still firmly pasted in the original scrapbook.

My mother did similar list-making activities several times during my childhood, and now it's fun to read how the lists changed over the years. Yesterday, I coerced my family into making a current list of my best qualities. Creating pages about me is usually a difficult task, but this technique made it a lot easier.
Try using a list of your subject's best qualities to add a different perspective to your next digital scrapbook page!
