Long journaling doesn’t come easily to me so I’ve had to think of ways to jumpstart the process. One of the tricks I use is to write my journaling in the form of a letter. Somehow, when I write a letter, my thoughts just flow naturally and results in heartfelt and very personal journaling. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. Just keep writing! After all, there is always spell check and grammar check in most word processing software. Before you know it, you will have written a long piece.
The other consideration in long journaling is placement. For this dilemma, there are many products in the Scrap Girls Boutique that can help. One such product is ScrapSimple Type Shapes: Journaling Around Squares. This one is specifically geared for long journaling because the type paths measure between 7 to 9 inches in both width and height. What I also like about this product is that aside from journaling placement, photo placement is already thought out for me!
If you haven’t used type shapes or type paths before, type shapes/paths allow your journaling or text to flow along a path or shape. They work in both Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 and up. (Refer to the PDF included in the product download for specific instructions on how to use type paths/shapes.)
On my layout below, you can see my letter to my twins, expressing my memories of when I was pregnant with them. I hope someday they will enjoy reading bits and pieces of that memorable and important time in my life. I initially aimed for at least 100 words, but ended up with 200!
So the next time you create a scrapbook layout, try writing a letter for your journaling - and let those words, thoughts, and feelings just flow.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Picture Book, ScrapSimple Type Shapes: Journaling Around Squares and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 are also available.

Borrowing Word Art Letters
Note: Tutorial created using PSCS5 with Windows Vista
Have you ever loved a word art set in your digital scrapbook supplies, but wished it included a particular word? I have! Occasionally, you can find the letters you need in the existing word art. If so, you can borrow the letters from the existing words to make the word that you need. Let me show you how.
I had already incorporated some of the word art choices from Squirt Collection Biggie into my digital scrapbook layout. I wanted to use the word birthday but it wasn’t included in the set. All of the letters could be found in some of the other words, so I brought four of the words to my open document in Photoshop Creative Suite 5 (PSCS5).
To borrow the letter B from the word art Big Squirt, activate that layer by clicking on the layer in the Layers Palette. You know the layer is active because it is highlighted in blue. Next, make sure the Rectangular Marquee Tool is selected. Click near the letter B and drag the mouse so that you have a “marching ants” box around the letter. You can do this step over, if need be, to get the box just right. Then right-click and choose Layer via Copy. This will put your selection on its own layer.
Continue this selection process for each letter that you need. Just remember to activate the proper word art layer each time. Once you have all of the letters selected and copied, you can hide the word art layers by clicking on the little eye icon in the Layers Palette for those particular layers. If you find that any of your selections grabbed a spot of an adjoining letter, you can just erase that with the Eraser Tool. Now you can bring your individual letters together and arrange them with the Move Tool.
I was thrilled to have the word birthday match the other words on my digital scrapbook layout. I also used the same technique to make the word LEGO! The next time you need a word to match the existing word art, see if the letters you need are available and give this technique a try.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Borderline 2, Splash Of Color Collection, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Ragamuffin Glitter 8501 and ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Deep Shadows 6501 PSE and PS Biggie are also available.
