Photo Papers

When printing photos for framing or other projects, it can be hard to decide which photo paper is best. Do you choose gloss, semi-gloss, high gloss, matte, or fine art paper? I recently made a trip to the store to pick up some glossy photo paper and was amazed at the variety and differences in price. I was scratching my head and thinking sometimes too many choices can be a bad thing!

As a rule of thumb, it's a safe bet to use paper from the same manufacturer as your printer. Most of the popular companies that make printers also offer photo papers. You can feel confident that these papers have been tested with the printers and will render good results. The drawback is that usually these papers are more expensive. You can get good results with less expensive photo papers; my personal favorite is Costco's Kirkland-brand Glossy Photo Paper. It's inexpensive and works great.

Let's talk about the main types of photo papers:

High Gloss

This paper is similar to what photo labs use and is a heavy-weight paper that produces quality prints. Coupled with archival inks, these prints can last many years in a photo album or picture frame. Keep in mind that the ink takes more time to dry on glossy paper so try not to touch the photo while you are taking it out of the printer and don't place anything on top of it.

Gloss

Gloss photo papers are lighter weight and cost less than the high gloss. These photo papers work great for photos to place in albums, frames, and photo calendars. As with the high gloss paper, you will need to allow extra drying time.

Semi-Gloss

This paper has less glare than glossy papers and still gives you that photo-lab feel.

Matte Paper

Matte paper has no gloss and reminds me of a smooth cardstock. An added benefit is that you can print on both sides. It comes in different weights and my personal favorite is a medium-weight which is excellent for printable crafts like ScrapSimple Craft Templates: 8 in 1 Mini Album and ScrapSimple Craft Templates: Pinwheel.

Fine Art Paper

There are several fine art photo papers intended for creating fine art prints to display. They come in several textures including canvas and can create some interesting effects.

Other considerations:

Brightness

Some photo papers list their brightness meaning the level of whiteness. This rating is usually shown as a number between 1-100. Photo papers are usually somewhere in the 90s. This is really only important if your project calls for a very bright white.

Weight

The weight of your photo paper is an important factor that really depends on what project you are working on. The weight of paper is usually expressed in pounds (lb.). For photo lab quality prints, use a heavier-weight paper, and for craft projects that need to be folded, a medium-weight cardstock is your best bet.

Sometimes it may take a few test runs of different photo paper types and weights for you to find a good fit for you, so just play and have fun with it!

Until next time!

Tips From The Pros

Recoloring Elements

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Windows 7

Usually I recolor items in my layout when I have a dominant color in my photographs that I want to echo in my papers or embellishments. In Adobe Photoshop, it is so easy to do!

Step One: Using the Eyedropper Tool, select a color from a photograph. In this case, I wanted the pink from the dress. You may have to click on a few different places to make sure you get the shade you want.

Step Two: Click on the Move Tool (the black arrow) or press V on your keyboard for the shortcut key.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Create selection using the Magic Wand Tool in Photoshop.

Step Three: Select the item you want to recolor. In my case, I wanted to recolor my circle embellishment. After I selected the embellishment group, I clicked on the Magic Wand Tool and selected the part of my embellishment I wanted to recolor. You will probably need to zoom in on your embellishment so you can see it close-up on your screen to make sure you've selected what you want recolored.

Some tips when selecting: Make sure the stacked squares are selected (see first screenshot), which will essentially keep adding things to your selection each time you click. This is handy when there are different variations of color in your element, but you want the entire element selected.

You know when something is selected when "marching ants" surround it.

I like to play with the tolerance level, depending on how my element is being selected. In this case, Tolerance is set to 32. That is a good tolerance which works with this embellishment – I was able to select the entire circle with one click, save a few small pieces.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Tag is selected.

Step Four: After your element is selected, and making sure the color that you want your element to be recolored has been selected and is the active color, click on Image> Adjustment> Hue/Saturation (or Ctrl+U). When the dialogue box pops up, click on "Colorize."

You may want to play with your sliders for Saturation and Lightness, or you may want to leave it just as it is.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Change Hue and Saturation.

June Message Board Game: Re-JUNE-venate!

We helped you jumpstart your January and now it's time to re-JUNE-venate your focus on scrapbooking! Join us on the Forum this month for "Re-JUNE-venate!" This is a Meassage Board game and challenge that focuses on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have several completed layouts and will have been challenged and treated to some fun along the way... with prize opportunities thrown in as well!

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge or task each day Monday through Saturday from June 1st - 30th. The tasks will be formatted in LARGE PURPLE FONT for ease of locating them in the game thread as it grows. Some tasks will require Message Board participation, email responses or gallery posting. Read each daily task carefully to see what is required of you.

Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 Gift Certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)

Join us in June for some serious scrapbooking re-JUNE-venation!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

Contests

June Monthly Layout Contest: Father's Day is celebrated in June in the United States, but a day set aside to honor our male parent is celebrated in many countries on different dates throughout the year. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen winners, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
