The day was long. My mind was cluttered. I searched for words to pray, but lacking my own, I began to sing a sweet hymn written by Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) whose prayerful words lifted my voice to the Heavens.
How gentle God's commands!
How kind His precepts are!
Come, cast your burden on the Lord
And trust His constant care.
"Yes, trust," I thought, as the words escaped my lips. "I'll trust His constant care. He doesn't leave me; I leave Him. If I stay, He's here. I don't have to be alone."
Beneath His watchful eye,
His Saints securely dwell;
That hand which bears all nature up
Shall guard His children well.
The hand that guards me... it is the same hand that led me through years of thick depression when faith in Him was the only light I could see. It is the same hand that guides me through challenges that would otherwise leave me perplexed. It is the same hand that plucked me from the swimming pool before I drowned, that held the truck steady during a 360-degree spin on a busy road, and that grasped mine tightly as I traveled through the veil to bring babies to this world during childbirth. Yes - oh, yes - He guards me well.
Why should this anxious load
Press down your weary mind?
Haste to your Heav'nly Father's throne
And sweet refreshment find.
I kneel at His throne twice a day, as a child speaking to her Father. I thank Him and praise Him, but then I do what most children do when they find themselves alone with their dad; I whine. "My day was hard," I remind Him, forgetting that He knows my experience exactly. "I'm confused. My legs ache. The kids are driving me crazy. I feel bad that I did - or said - or thought - that thing."
He doesn't mind my complaints and worries, but sits on His throne, patiently listening, encouraging, cheering, reaching, and waiting... waiting for the words to fall at His feet so He can lift them up and carry my burdens on His strong back. I've given Him my concerns in exchange for His lighter load of love, peace, joy, and hope.
Refreshed, I stand and sing again.
His goodness stands approved,
Unchanged from day to day;
I'll drop my burden at His feet
And bear a song away.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

It's All in the Brushes
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista
Digital brushes are amazing tools if you know how to use them. There are so many different ways you can use a brush. In this tutorial, I'm going to help you locate your brush panel, Brush Tool bar, and the Brush Tip Shape section of the brush panel that will allow you to change the brush to fit your project's needs.
A few basics about the Brush Tool:
It paints with the foreground color.
It can easily be used by clicking and dragging.
To create a straight line, you simply press Shift+Click and drag while holding your mouse button down. Or you can click and move to the end of your desired line, press Shift+Click again.
You can change the brush, diameter of the tip, mode, opacity, flow, and the Air Brush Tool by simply clicking the appropriate icon in the top tool bar. You can learn more about these tools by playing around with them.
It is important to understand the difference between opacity and flow so you can use them to their full potential.
Opacity: When you click, hold, and move your brush around, it will stay at the opacity you have set. Only by continuing to click and brushing over the same location will it continue to build, changing the opacity until it reaches 100%.
Flow: With flow, you continue to build up the layers of paint over the top of your previous strokes no matter how many times you click until you reach 100%.
With your Brush Tool selected, you can access your panel a few different ways. From the menu bar across the top, go to Windows> Brushes. A couple of shortcuts are simply by pressing F5, and located just above your working area is a toggle switch that can be seen when your Brush Tool is selected.
From your brush panel, you can change the way your brush is going to stamp in many different ways. Playing around in this area will help you gain some understanding about how powerful the Brush Tool actually is.
One of the features that I often use is Spacing, which can be located in the Brush Tip Shape section of the brush panel. You can use the slider to move the brush images as far apart or as close together as you would like. This is perfect if you want to stamp a line with several images of the brush. With some brushes, you can change the hardness, the angle, and the rotation.
Hopefully, you've caught a glimpse of how great the brush panel can be. This is a hands-on feature of Photoshop, so the more you play, the more you learn!

Using the ScrapSimple Club
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 with Windows 7
Have you seen this month's ScrapSimple Club? It's chock full of stamps, grungy torn papers, corrugated cardboard, stitching, and so much more of the collage-y type elements that are so popular in digital scrapbooking these days.
If you're a member of the ScrapSimple Club, you know what a value and convenience it is - you get all of the newest looks in our popular ScrapSimple digital scrapbooking line while saving money, and it's delivered right to your inbox every month. If you're not a member - well, you don't know what you're missing!
Don't think that it's difficult to use these types of products. (Remember, it's the ScrapSimple Club!) When I created this layout using the club, I used just one simple technique to get the look I was after: Recoloring.
Many of the ScrapSimple products included in this month's club are layered files, so you can color each layer separately. I chose Solid Color Adjustment Layers to color mine. First, I built my layout with the supplies and my photo, and then I started to recolor the layers.
Here's how you can do it: Using your Eye Dropper Tool, pick a color from your layout or photo - one that you want to use to recolor your element. This will become your Foreground Color. Now click on the layer you want to recolor. This activates the layer. At the bottom of your Layers Palette, click on the "Create New Fill" or Adjustment Layer icon (it's the little icon that looks like a circle - half white, half gray). Click on "Solid Color" from the menu. The color you picked will fill the screen and a dialog box will appear. You can adjust your color here with the slider if you like. Click "OK."
Now you have a Solid Color Adjustment layer above the layer you wanted to color. "Clip" the new layer to the layer below it by hitting Ctrl+G on your keyboard.
Your next step is to change the Blend Mode. In all of the layers in the template I used from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Stamps and Stuff, I used the Blend Mode: "Color." I've indicated in the screenshot below where to go in Photoshop Elements to change the Blend Mode. Click the arrow on the icon bar and chose "Color."
And that's it! Have fun using your ScrapSimple Club supplies!
These first four products are included in this month's ScrapSimple Club offering. Members receive a substantial discount on these club supplies. They are also available elsewhere in the Boutique at regular prices for those individuals who would rather not join a club.
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Stamps and Stuff, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Stamps and Stuff, ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Tabbed Cards, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Picture Book, ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Deep Shadows 6501 PSE and PS Biggie and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 are also available.

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.
To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
