Scrap Girls is looking for qualified digital scrapbooking teachers to teach Photoshop and Photoshop Elements classes. Teachers will be required to create class PDFs that will be reviewed prior to class. Teachers have complete flexibility in scheduling classes.
Candidates must have strong skills in Photoshop and/or Photoshop Elements and exhibit strong layout design skills. Knowledge of both programs is a plus. They must be warm and friendly, comfortably handle fast-paced chat room situations, and be able to easily answer questions that arise regarding their particular software area of expertise.
Candidates will be required to audition for this paid position. There will be a list of topics available from which classes can be developed; however, the teachers are encouraged to present their own ideas for approval as well.
Please contact Katherine Weaver at [email protected] for more details. If you are interested in applying, please forward to Katherine an up-to-date resume as well as a sample tutorial you have written. Application deadline is Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
It's a scrapbooker’s dream... you have a quiet evening at home all to yourself. You're caught up with the dishes, laundry has been done, and this is all "you" time. You start up your laptop, turn on Photoshop Elements, and then it happens...
You sit there, staring at your screen for the next two hours in complete "scrappers block." And the next thing you know, your family walks back in the door. It's time to start getting the kids ready for bed... and you never even got your layout started.
I don't know if the above situation has ever happened to you, but it has happened to me many, many times. It always seems that when I have time to scrap, I have no inspiration, or when the inspiration hits me, it's in the middle of the day when I don't have free time.
What I started doing a long time ago was keeping a notebook and also a folder on my computer for inspiration. I keep both of these handy so that when I have those free moments, I can go back to them and have a starting point for a layout.
You might be asking yourself exactly where do you find this inspiration the next time you need it. Inspiration can be found in almost any daily life activity. What I look for are things that catch my eye. I've been inspired by:
I love looking at the different types of typography on labels. Those are always great inspiration for titles on my scrapbook pages.
Ads are a great source of fresh ideas for photo placement and page layouts. Sometimes you can get ideas for photo composition, too. Think how much money a company pours into its advertising department to design ads that will grab our attention and make us notice their product. Take their basic layout and substitute your own theme, photos, and digital scrapbooking papers and embellishments.
I love looking at different pieces of artwork and getting shape combination ideas. Children's artwork is a great place to get ideas on how to combine different pattern papers and textures.
Family and friends
By listening to their conversations or watching them interact, you can get a lot of ideas for layout topics.
I love to observe how colors work together, and I take note of the ones that catch my eye. These can be found everywhere you look. From walking down the street and seeing flowers planted outside of a house to shopping for new bathroom towels. I'm always on the lookout for combinations I may not have thought of on my own or ones that I find pleasing to the eye.
The next time you're looking through that old magazine one last time before you throw it out, if you run across something that grabs your eye, tear it out. Or if you're browsing the Internet and see an advertisement you really like, right-click on it and save it. Tape it to a notebook page or move it into a folder on your computer. Then when you need a little inspiration to get started on your next page, you'll have it right there at your fingertips.

Just Part of the Experience
Our family spends summer vacations camping. Sometimes that will include canoeing, sometimes a portage, usually fishing, and most often, bugs. One thing it always includes is an adventure.
One year, my poor husband slammed the van door on his finger. Another year, he put his back out. Three years ago, our son, Evan, sliced his thumb with a knife, and we had to come home early. One summer, we were nearly eaten alive by black flies. Another year, I swallowed a moth, and last year, I had a flat tire on the van only 20 minutes into our drive. Fortunately, Dave was just ahead of us in the truck, and I had my trusty phone to call him. He pulled over to answer and then turned around to rescue us. Naturally, I recorded the action and shared it via Facebook!
After reading Becca Hauck's article, "Printing Cell Phone Photos," in the Scrap Girls Newsletter on Saturday, April 16, I decided I needed to create a digital scrapbook layout so that I would have a permanent record of the event!
Choosing a title for a layout is, for me, almost as important as the photos themselves. For this layout, I wanted to use one of my husband's favorite sayings, "It's all just part of the experience." I like to use part of my journaling as my title, and since his saying was already the last line of my journaling, it was the perfect choice for the title.
Next time, you create a layout that uses journaling, try choosing a few words from your story to use as a title. It can really set the tone for your digital scrapbook layout!

Want an easy formula for placing embellishments or clusters (groups) of embellishments on your layouts? I know I do!
One formula is to add embellishments in a triangle shape on your page. Clear as mud? Let me show you an example with the triangle actually drawn on for emphasis.
For the layout shown, I really wanted to add some small pops of red-colored embellishments. I knew that would add visual interest and help keep the eye moving around on the page. Though there are musical notes scattered around the page in more than just the three places, the eye subconsciously reads the three bright pops of red flowers as a triangle. A very pleasing arrangement and simple to remember!

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!
Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.
To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used.
