Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Brandy Hackman. In a short interview with Brandy, she shared these comments with us...

Since about 75% of the photos I scrap are of my boys, I tend the create collections that have a bit of a masculine edge. My Stylize products reflect this tendancy. Although I admit that I almost always throw in a couple of floral and softer papers and embellis, because the girl in me can't resist! After all, I am ocassionally in a photo that is scrap-worthy, too!

1. What is currently playing on your iPod/radio?

"Angel" by Shaggy

2. When designing a collection, what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

Definitely papers.

Life Muse by Ro

Rozanne Paxman
Rozanne Paxman

A flamingo among crows, her pink velour track suit and silver, sparkly runners set her apart from her fellow travelers who were largely dressed in denim and black. She vaguely considered the contrast she added to the crowd. She briefly wondered if she looked like she was on her way to a retirement home in Florida. She even entertained the thought that perhaps there were those in the crowd that considered her off-kilter because she, quite obviously, didn't read the dress code memo of the day.

Softly smiling to herself, she realized that she liked being different. She always had. She liked singing her own songs, telling her own tales, and walking on her own line.

"Isn't it interesting," she thought, "that most people are afraid of their own voices? How many women would wear bright pink track suits to the airport - as soft, snuggly, and comfortable as pajamas - if they only dared to be a flamingo among crows?

Muse Photo: Airport travlers.

Using Paper Templates and Blending Modes

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard

ScrapSimple Paper Templates are incredibly versatile! This tutorial will teach you the basics of using Blending Modes to create an effect on paper with your ScrapSimple Paper Templates.

First, open the paper you want to create an effect on, such as a paper from Beautiful Garden Collection, which I have used here. Then open a ScrapSimple Paper Template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Circus and drag it onto your paper.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Open background paper and paper template.

At the top of the Layers Palette are the Blending Modes. It's a pull-down menu box that says "Normal." Click on "Normal" and a menu of Blending Mode options will appear. Select an option and see what it looks like. The example below uses "Color Burn." All of the gray and black areas of the ScrapSimple template have now turned into shades of green as it has "blended" with the background paper.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Select Blending Mode.

Selecting a Blending Mode isn't the only thing you can do. Just to the right of the Blending Modes menu are boxes for Opacity and Fill. The percent values in these boxes determine how much blending occurs and in what fashion. Lowering the Opacity percentage also alters all effects added to a layer, like shadows and strokes, etc. Lowering the Fill percentage does not alter these effects. Changing these percentages will give you different results, based on the specific qualities of the layers being blended and the chosen Blending Mode.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Change Fill and Opacity.

Below are two more samples of Blending Modes using the exact same layers. The "Overlay" mode gives a more washed-out effect, while the "Luminosity" mode maintains the light and dark nature of the original ScrapSimple template.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Sample of Blending Modes.

Combining Blending Modes and ScrapSimple Paper Templates is a simple way to create a myriad of effects in digital scrapbooking. Play around and have fun creating one-of-a-kind designs with Blending Modes and ScrapSimple Templates!

A Summertime Banner Craft

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7

I have really been into banners this month, because I'm in charge of a craft at church (which is... you guessed it - a banner!).

You've probably seen what I'm talking about – the pendant-type banners are all the rage around the Internet. They are hung for whatever purpose or reason - Christmas, birthdays, Valentine's Day, Easter - and they are so festive and fun! I'm smitten with banners.

So it comes as no surprise that when I saw Brandy Murry's Scrap Girls Club for May, the first thing that came to my mind was the thought that this Club selection would make a fantastic banner! And it did....

My banner was so absolutely easy to create in Photoshop and so easy to assemble. This is the perfect craft-in-a-jiffy for any crafter-on-the-go. You can make it as simple or as elaborate as you want. The sky is truly the limit here.

The first step to creating the banner is to decide on the size of your triangular pendant pieces. I wanted to stick with a size that I could print on 8.5x11-inch paper.

First, find a triangle shape in Photoshop and draw it on a layer. (Check out the Shapes Palette for all sorts of fabulous Photoshop shapes.)

Next, click-and-drag papers and embellishments to use on your pendant. Use clipping masks (Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements; Ctrl+Shift+G in Photoshop) to "clip" your papers and embellishments to the triangle shape.

Make a different document for each triangular pendant. Also, make sure you don't create two pendants right next to each other in the same colors – be sure to vary them for interest.

That's it! That's really all the thought it takes. For my banner, I used some of Brandy Murry's pre-finished digital scrapbooking pages – the exclusive Members-Only JIFFY Easy Page Album - 12x12: Zoomba. You can't get easier than using a product that's already finished!

After designing your banner, you will print out each page separately and cut out each. I simply used a paper cutter. Then I used miniature clothespins (from the scrapbooking section of a local store) to attach the pendants to a length of ribbon. I love the clothespins because my banner pendants become interchangeable. As the mood strikes, I can create endless pendants to hang over my fireplace.

The colors and style of this Club collection were absolutely perfect for a summertime pendant – so that is exactly what I used it for. I think I used practically every piece in the entire collection at least once (if not more than once). Everything is so fun and coordinated – which is what I absolutely love about the Scrap Girls Club collections. You just can't beat the value for the money – and the ease of putting a layout (or a craft) together is unsurpassed.

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
