A Designers Life

Amanda Fraijo-Tobin
Amanda Fraijo-Tobin

Just A Name

Some of you may have noticed my name change in the Boutique. It's me - Amanda Sok - just with a more complicated, hyphenated last name. Fraijo-Tobin has actually been my legal name for five years. When I first started at Scrap Girls, my legal name was still Sok. Shortly after, I was remarried, and my name changed. I decided to keep Sok for my Scrap Girls ventures for a few reasons. It's short, people were already familiar with the name attached to my designs, and my new married last name is a whopper!

(Literally, I can see your confusion in wondering how in the world you pronounce it. It's FRY-ho Tobin.)

It was a personal choice to go ahead and change my name on the site to reflect my "real" name. I haven't been Amanda Sok in a long time. A lot has changed in my life since I was that gal, and I have not had any sort of attachment to that name in a long time. So please forgive me if you'll have to readjust yourself to seeing a different SKU for my products. I promise you, it's still me! You can still expect the same products, the same silliness, just a different last name. And I thank you - my great customers - for sticking with me this long. I'd like to think I'm just including you in how I've grown these past few years.

So, hello, my name is Amanda. Nice to meet you - again.

- Amanda

I love glitter and anything sparkly, and glitter styles are one of my favorite things to make. These are unique in the fact that they come with a pretty color-coordinated glow for each style. They also include three variations so you can also use the ones without the glows for adding a touch of glitter outline to embellishments or alphas you already have.

Who doesn't love getting a birthday gift?! We know we do, and we know you do, too!

Scrap Girls sends out gift certificates to all our members who have registered for the Forum during the week of their birthday. It's very quick and simple to do.

First, go to the website and click on the Forum tabs across the top. This will bring up a new screen. Up in the right-hand corner, you'll find a link for new users to register.

Once you have done this, you'll look over the rules and regulations. Check the box at the bottom that you agree to them and click Continue.

The next page is where you'll actually register for the Forum. You'll enter all your information, including the screen name you'd like to have.

After your account has been validated, you'll be able to log in with your Forum information. Once you have logged in, you'll click on the drop-down arrow next to your name and select My Settings.

Then click on the My Profile tab. Scroll down a bit and just make sure your birthday is selected correctly. If it is not, make any changes needed and hit Submit at the bottom.

If all your information is entered correctly, then during your birthday week we will send out your gift certificate. You will receive it the first part of the week. Please keep in mind that the birthday gift certificate is only valid for a short period of time. The expiration date is on the gift certificate email.

If your birthday has gone by and you did not receive your gift certificate, first make sure that your birthday is entered correctly in your profile. If it was, then send us an email at [email protected], and we'll get you taken care of. We like birthdays and don't want to miss even one!

Tips From The Pros

Color Theory: Blue-based vs. Yellow-based Colors

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 5.0 with Windows Vista

Did you know it's not a good idea to mix blue-based and yellow-based colors in your digital scrapbooking layouts? But wait, you say, doesn't that make green? Green is a good color, right? Right!

Blue and yellow do in fact make green, and green is a terrific color. But when I say blue-based colors and yellow-based colors don't mix, I'm referring to a cooler-tone color mixing with a warmer-tone color. Take a look at the color wheel divided into warm and cool tones:

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Color wheel.

As you can see, blues are a cooler color and yellows are a warmer cooler. Now let's say I have an old scanned photograph that has lots of yellow and warmer tones in it or even a newer photo that has a vintage yellow tint to it. I don't necessarily want to create a scrapbooking layout using cooler blue-base-toned papers and embellishments. If I do, I may get a layout that looks like this:

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Layout uses opposite color tones.

Not bad, except for the fact that the warmer yellow-based colors of the photo and the cooler blues of the scrapbooking products are competing with each other. The whole layout just feels off. Now if I switch the colors up and use warmer yellow-based scrapbooking products in my layout, they will complement my photo instead of fighting with it.

Take a look for yourself in the layout below.

More agreeable, right? Keep in mind that yellow and blue can look great together but when you are scrapping a photo with a lot of warmer yellow tones in it, cooler blue-toned products don't necessarily add a rich artistic layout. Yellow-toned photographs often need warmer colors to compliment them, and thus make the scrapbooking page more pleasing to the eye.

It's not hard, and she will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout! Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

Games

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Contests

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
