This month, we asked Elisha Barnett to step into the Designer Spotlight and answer our questions about what makes her designer-heart tick! Elisha started as a Layout Team member, and she continued to hone her skills to become a designer, so she has worked her way up to the top! Sit down with her for some Q&A and check out her Designer Spotlight 40% Off Sale in her store this week until 8/15.
Tell us about your journey to become a designer.
I created my first collection for Scrap Girls in 2011, so I’ve been designing for seven years. Prior to that, I had been on the Layout Design Team. When there was a call that year for new designers, I thought I’d like to try for it. My submission was pitifully poor, but Ro Paxman, the owner of Scrap Girls at the time, must have thought I had some potential. She personally gave me training and guidance in putting together that first collection, and I’ve been designing for Scrap Girls ever since.
What’s your least favorite thing to design?
My least favorite thing to design is word art. I love good word art, but I have a hard time designing it myself. I tend not to use them in my own scrapping, instead relying on a good font for journaling and titles. Perhaps that’s why I have a hard time coming up with them.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
My favorite part of the day is definitely early morning before the rest of the family wakes up. I spend the quiet time cuddling my puppies, drinking coffee, in meditation, prayer, or study.
Have you always wanted to be in graphic design?
You might never guess that I have a degree in veterinary technology! I went to school when my kids were just babies, and when I finished, I didn’t pursue a job right away. I wanted a bit of a break, and then my husband got a really great job and we moved. I was happy to stay at home with the kids, and I let my license lapse. I got involved with other hobbies and interesting part time jobs and I never pursued it again.
If you could max out a credit card (guilt-free!), where would it be?
I’d be most likely to max out my credit card at Staples. There are so many goodies that I love in that store! I can’t resist office supplies and pens. And oh, the tech and gadgets! Computers, big monitors, tablets make my mouth water. I have to wear blinders in that store!
What was your favorite TV show as a kid?
My favorite TV show growing up was Little House on the Prairie. I loved watching spunky Laura Ingalls get into trouble, and I loved how much the family loved and cared for each other. It was a joy to watch her grow up. And I loved to hate Nellie and Mrs. Oleson!
