Everyone loves to peek behind the artistic mask of our designers — so come along and get to know our designers better as we feature one each month in our Designer Spotlight. This month, we’re turning the spotlight on Syndee Nuckles, whose presence is pretty much synonymous with Scrap Girls! She picked out 10 of her favorite products for the Designer Spotlight 40% Off Sale — so pop over to Syndee’s store before March 22 and load up your cart with Syndee’s amazing creativity.
How long have you been designing and how did you get into it?
I’ve been a designer for Scrap Girls for 12 years, but I was designing rubber stamps and clip art for many years before I happened upon Scrap Girls!
I was on a few Creative Teams for paper scrapbooking product companies when one of my friends sent me an ad that said Scrap Girls was looking for layout artists. Well, I was mostly a paper scrapbooker but I had done digital pages for gifts, so I thought, “Why not?” I was pretty surprised when Mandy emailed and said, “Congratulations!” We started emailing back and forth through my training and she found out I had designed rubber stamps and clip art. She asked to see some of my designs. I sent a few along and then she asked if I wanted to be on the Design Team! I was a bit floored, but said, “Heck, yeah!” The rest is history!
What’s something we would never guess about you?
What’s on your desk?
It yo-yos between being a total mess to super-clean. (I’m sharing a picture of when it’s clean.) My desk is from (you guessed it) IKEA and when it’s clean, it’s home to a basket of papers that have nowhere to be, my microphone, computer, iPad, scanner, and EHDs. Now, when it’s a mess, it’s filled with lots of papers, scraps with doodles and notes, random things like ketchup packets (I have no idea why those are on my desk, btw!), fashion magazines (so I can easily get distracted), and a bunch of other stuff.
Which store would you most likely max-out your credit card?
Hands down, it’s IKEA! I can get lost in there for hours. I guess it’s good that the closest one is about two hours away. One of the most amazing things to me about IKEA is how they replicate an actual living space that’s tiny — say 450 square feet or something ridiculous like that. Yet they always manage to fit in a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom, etc. I used to always think I needed a huge space to exist – but when I am in those tiny spaces that are so organized, everything makes sense and I think I could actually love a small space like that.
What is your favorite cereal?
Semi-healthy Syndee loves Shredded Wheat (the frosted one) but the little kid in me loves Golden Grahams – which I think is more of a nostalgic choice for me. It reminds me of my amazing cousin Christopher when we were kids. My aunt had bought the cereal right after it came out and I loved it. We lost my cousin a couple years ago, and I miss him every day. I started buying that cereal again, which I think, in a way, to keep him close to me.
What would you do if you were invisible for the day?
I am a huge IKEA fan for the same reason, Syndee! I don’t live close to one any more (at least 2.5 hours from here) but I go whenever I’m near one.
I love your designs and look forward to all your new releases! Thank you for all you do for Scrap Girls! It just wouldn’t be the same without you!!
