Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Windows Vista
This tutorial will show you how to make a fire station-themed card using Firefighter Collection Biggie.
A fire station card is great for numerous occasions. If you know a child who loves fire engines, such a card would be great for their birthday. If you want to announce something, on the inside of the card you can start off with, “Sound the alarm….” Part of the fun is using printable scrapbook supplies to create the card.
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Open up a new document. I want the card to be 4×6 inches. I will be printing on 8.5×11-inch paper, so I chose 11×8.5 inches as my document size.
2. Use the Rectangle Tool (shortcut key U) to create a 4×6-inch rectangle on a new layer. I will do this twice and place the rectangles next to each other on the page.
3. I’m going to use a grey paper for my background. When I place it into the document, I drag the corners to fill the whole background. The grey paper I’m using from Firefighter Collection Biggie won’t be hurt by a little bit of stretching.
4. Clip the grey paper to one of the rectangles. Duplicate the paper and place it above the other rectangle and clip it to that rectangle.
5. Bring the fire station, fire engine, and Dalmatian onto the document and clip them to the right-hand rectangle. (Make sure they are showing above the grey paper.) Resize and position them as needed and add drop shadows.
6. Change the opacity of the left-hand rectangle. I am lowering it to 20%. If you want the back of the card to be as dark as the front, you can leave it alone. Making it lighter helps to serve as a guideline when folding the card. You could also just leave the back of the card blank.
7. Now you are ready to print! I am using white cardstock that I can print on both sides. You can leave the inside of the card white. I’m going to take the grey paper (the one from step 3 that was stretched to fill the document) and print it on the backside of the paper. This will become the inside of the card.
8. After you are finished printing, trim away the excess paper. Score the paper where the fold will be using a bone folder, credit cart, butter knife, or whatever tool you usually use for such occasions. I happened to grab my ruler and some small utensil from my kitchen drawer. Score the card then fold it.
9. Isn’t it lovely? You can handwrite a note on the inside. You can also type up a sentiment and add more embellishments on a smaller rectangle and paste it on the inside.
10. If you want to add an interesting effect, you can trim away the grey background on the upper area of the front of the card.
I hope you feel inspired to use your printable scrapbook supplies to make a card. I need to go write a note in mine before I put it in an envelope. Have fun!
