Scanning Dimensional Objects with the Flip-Pal

Back in November 2013, we ran a contest on our blog where we gave away a Flip-Pal mobile scanner. To enter the contest, we asked you to tell us your fun and creative idea for using the Flip-Pal. We got over 75 terrific ideas from our readers, making it hard to pick just one winner.

Ultimately, we picked Pam Zeman of Michigan as the winner. Pam has a love for all things vintage and  imagined using the Flip-Pal to scan her vintage button collection.

We will be checking in with Pam during the year to see what she has been doing with her Flip-Pal. Today’s tutorial is written by Pam and features her Filp-Pal. If you are inspired by what you see, remember that you can get your own Flip-Pal by ordering straight from the Scrap Girls Boutique here!

I fell in love with vintage buttons a couple of years ago when I ran into a button dealer at a flea market. There were hundreds of large, old, coat buttons, so I bought a few dozen. After that, I was hooked, and I’m always on the lookout for unique buttons. I soon discovered that collecting buttons is serious business, and there is even a National Button Society. Serious collectors exhibit buttons by carefully arranging them in patterns and mounting them on cards.

Buttons are my go-to embellishment. There are so many different colors and shapes of buttons that I will surely find one that meets my needs. I put the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner to the test when I scanned some of my old coat buttons. There was some depth to the buttons so I wasn’t sure how the images would turn out. Most of the buttons are at least 1/8-inch thick and have a loop shank on the back. I worked on the carpet and laid the buttons, one at a time, on a piece of white paper towel. I took off the lid of the scanner, laid the scanner on the button, pressed the button into the carpet and hit the scan button.

I was pleasantly surprised that the images are clear – and now I’ve found a way to scan objects that don’t have a flat surface! Next, I’m going to scan skeleton keys. I like using the Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner better than my camera because the scanner is so easy to use, and it will scan just about anything. Owning a Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner definitely allows me to personalize scrapbook layouts on a whole new level!
