Would you like to create a cute little sewing kit for yourself or as a gift? This tutorial will show you how to print on fabric, making it easy for you do a quick sewing or craft project without having to run to a fabric store. Simply keep some good white cotton fabric on hand for printing. You’ll be able to create as many patterned fabrics as you have patterned digital scrapbooking paper.
1. Open up a digital scrapbook paper that you would like to use for the fabric covering the pin cushion.
2. Once you have a design or paper chosen, iron a piece of white cotton fabric slightly larger than 8.5×11 inches onto a piece of freezer paper. The paper should stick really well, making it possible for you to cut the fabric to the size of standard letter paper. You are now ready to print on fabric.
3. Place the fabric sheet in the tray for thick paper. Adjust your print settings to a paper that has a good thickness like cardstock or matte photo paper. Select the print quality to High and begin printing.
4. Let the ink set. Peel off the freezer paper and use your fabric for your project. If you are using the fabric in something that will be washed regularly, you might want to purchase a treated fabric in sheets or purchase the chemicals to treat your own white cotton, making it washable and long lasting. I knew I wouldn’t be washing my pin cushion so I didn’t worry about it.
5. Cut your fabric in a very large circle to cover your canning jar lid. Get a chunk of cotton batting to place on top of the lid. Begin wrapping your fabric over it, tucking in the batting to make a nice, puffy pin cushion. With a hot glue gun, start gluing it to the bottom of the lid. Pop the lid into the canning ring. You can leave it as it is or cover up the rough fabric edges with a white fabric circle.
Finish your sewing kit by adding simple sewing items such as thread, needles, scissors, buttons, snaps, measuring tape, and other sewing goodies. Put some straight pins in your pin cushion top, and you are ready to go! You can even make a matching tag to tie on for a finishing touch.
I was excited to be able to print on fabric so that I could create a custom sewing fabric to match. There are so many ways you can use this technique on other small simple craft projects. I hope you have fun making one of your own!
