Did a font on a layout, card, ad, or in a magazine catch your eye? Have you ever been driven crazy because you LOVE the font so much but have no idea what it’s called or where to get it? Well, I have good news for you!
There have been sites around for a while now that claim to help you identify fonts, but a lot of them require a bunch of work and don’t really work that well. I have found that WhatFontIs.com works pretty well!WhatFontIs.com allows you to upload either an image or add a URL with the font you want to identify. It will then search for the font and also show you similar fonts. If you click on the red question mark box on the left-hand side it will give you some criteria on what the image should include before you upload it. (I usually take screenshots of things that have fonts I am interested in and save them in a file on my computer until I have time to search for them.)
Once you upload a photo, press the Red Find A Font button.
If it has trouble identifying the font it will show you the image editor screen shown below. In the boxes where it’s correctly, or even partially correctly detecting the letter, type in the exact letter on the red line below it. It asks you do that for 4-10 letters.
Then hit the Red Continue button towards the bottom of the page.
It will then show you the font and/or very similar fonts. You can designate wether you want to see free, commercial fonts or both. There have been a couple times when I ran the image a couple times and got a better result.
And that’s it!
This site has worked pretty well for me so far! I would love to hear if anyone has a site that they love for identifying fonts!
Thanks for this great tip!
You are so welcome!
What font is used in your sample. I really like the letter F. Thanks for the link to the font identifier. Great post.
Hi Beatrice!
The font is called Cairo.
