Everyone loves to peek behind the artistic mask of our designers — so come along and get to know our designers as we feature one each month in our Designer Spotlight. This month, we’re turning the spotlight on Darryl of DRB Designs, who brings to Scrap Girls an endless passion for designing flowers (and a secret desire to move south). She picked out 10 of her favorite products for the Designer Spotlight 40% Off Sale — so pop over to Darryl’s store before April 19th and load up your cart with a bouquet of her amazing creations.
What’s your favorite (and your least favorite) thing to design?
My favorite thing to design are flowers, flowers, and more flowers! They often decide the color palette of the entire collection. There are so many sizes and shapes to choose from. My least favorite? I guess I really struggle with things that are hard to extract like lace.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I spend a lot of time looking at color palettes to get inspiration. My husband often looks at what I’m designing and says, “I never thought those colors would look good together but they really do!” I would never have thought so either unless I saw them together on a palette.
When not designing, what are you doing?
I love to spend time with my daughter — she’s an excellent artist so we often end up painting or doing something artsy-craftsy. I try to get to the YMCA three times a week to attend a range-of-motion exercise class in their warm pool. I have met many good friends there. Otherwise, I’m kind of a hermit!
What’s in your refrigerator?
(Confession: I had to go take a peek before answering — that’s how bad my memory is!) Always a big carton of Greek vanilla yogurt. Lots of veggies because we like to do a meatless meal at least every other night. I wish I could say gallons of ice cream because it’s my favorite thing in the world, but it’s not in there for that very reason.
If you could choose one place to live, where would it be and why?
I’ve always lived close to my family because I couldn’t imagine being away from them. But living up here in Wisconsin, I fantasize about moving to Florida more and more each winter. Maybe I could talk them all into going with me!
What was your favorite TV show when you were growing up?
The Monkees. I had a huge crush on Mickey because he was so funny. A few years ago, he was in my hometown performing in a musical. A friend of mine met him at a local bar — and I was so jealous! (Don’t tell my hubby!)
