Behind the Scenes: Armi Custodio’s September ScrapSimple Club

sept 2013 scrapsimple club

Each month we get a glimpse behind the scenes of our Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club designers, and this month’s designer is Armi Custodio!

When you started working on your club, what was the first thing you did?

I rummaged through all the closets and started pulling out all the denim clothing my family had. I was shocked to realize that 80% of our wardrobe consisted of denim! Now I love denim, but I think a shopping trip to the mall for non-denim clothing is in order!

Where did you find the inspiration for this club?

I wanted to design something that had a universal appeal. How much more universal can you get with denim? All across the world, from California to Manila (where I’m from), almost everyone has at least one pair of denim jeans. In case you are interested, the word for denim in my language is “maong” (pronounced in two syllables, ma-ong).

Inspiration board Armi put together when she began working on her club:

The club includes several products. Did you start and complete each one before moving on to the next?

I think we designers are a restless lot. I jump from one product to another depending on my mood.

What was your favorite thing to design?

I liked doing the denim pockets. I think they are a unique way to hold photos and small embellishments. They can also be dressed up in several ways like adding buttons, rivets, stitching and embroidery.

Original pocket Armi extracted and used in her embellishment templates set below.

About how long did it take you to design this club?

Too long! LOL! I have little kids and I find it quite difficult to carve out design time even with the 3 ½ month project timeline given. I had to really push it during the last month of the project; pulling several all-nighters along the way. I lost five pounds with no dieting and exercising, lol!

How did you come up with the name of your club?

I guess the products speak for themselves! I named the club “Denim Delight”.
