5 Creative Uses for Brushes

Creative Digital Brush Use - Tutorial Intro Banner
Brushes are one of those things that most digital scrapbookers either love or hate. There are very few people who don’t have a definite opinion on brushes. My aim today is to support the brush-lovers and to hopefully, sway a few of you brush-haters over to our side by presenting some creative digital brush use.

No matter what you wish to do in digital scrapbooking, you can probably use a brush to help complete it. For every use you can find for a brush, there is a suitable brush available to do it. To show you what I mean I’ve created 5 different layouts using my cat Soxy and 5 different brush techniques.

1. Using a brush as a brush.

Huh? Has she lost her mind? No! When I say “as a brush,” I mean in a traditional way: Using a brush with a color on it as you would use a traditional brush. Using brushes in this way allows you to use paint to add color and interest to a page.

Examples of brushes fit for this purpose include:

Brush Set: Watercolor Strokes Biggie
Digital Brush Set: Markers Biggie

This layout uses both ScrapSimple Brush Set: Watercolor Strokes and ScrapSimple Brush Set: Markers Biggie just as you would use a regular brush.

2. Using a brush as an eraser.

This is exactly like using a brush as a brush, but in reverse. You select a brush pattern you like, but you use it as an eraser. Examples of brushes used in this way include:

Brush Set: Time Traveler - Clouds Biggie
Dynamic Brush Set: Background Blenders
This layout uses the Dynamic Brush Set: Background Blenders as an eraser.

3. Using brushes to add texture.

Brushes not only add color to a page, but they also allow the digital scrapbooker to add some texture to our otherwise flat pages. They give dimension and depth. Examples of brushes that can be used in this way include:

Brush Set: Essential Light Grunge
Brush Set: Essentials - Canvas
This layout uses the Brush Set: Essentials – Canvas to add texture. I have also added a slight bevel to enhance the effect.

As an extension to this idea, we can use brushes to distress and age an item.
Certain brushes can be used to give that grunged-up effect to a photo or page, or even to add age. Examples of brushes used for this purpose include:

Brush Set: Erosion Biggie
Brush Set: Essential Grungy Lines
4. Using brushes as a design element.

By this, I mean as a photo mat, a clipping mask, a frame, a stamp, word art, border, etc. Brushes can be used to take the place of other items in many cases. Examples of brushes that are suitable for this purpose include:

Digital Brush Set: Scripted
Digital Brush Set: Paperazzi Biggie
This layout features the Brush Set: Paperazzi Biggie 1 as a design element.

5. Using brushes to create an artistic effect.

Certain brushes recreate the look of an artist’s brush. These can be used to create an artistic effect. Examples of brushes used in this way include:

Dynamic Brush Set: Ultimate Artist 2
This layout features the Dynamic Brush Set: Ultimate Artist 2  to achieve the sketched effect. I combined it with the a designed brush frame. Brushes combine wonderfully!

These are just five examples of ways in which we can use brushes. Make a point of trying a creative digital brush use today and be sure to post your layout (and how you used the brush) to the Scrap Girls Gallery.
