Printable Heart Shaped Valentine Cards Tutorial

I  recently invited friends to my house to create Valentine cards.  All of the ladies were crafty but none of them had made cards and they wanted to give it a try.  I wanted them to leave with some finished cards; and I wanted to teach them a few  basic techniques and most importantly, I didn’t want them to feel overwhelmed by their first card making experience.

Since we were all of a certain age, we remembered the little heart shaped cards we used to share when we were in grade school. My goal was to create a similar feel with my digital and hybrid supplies.  These are super simple and make a quick, easy project you can make and share with others!

Supplies List:
Digital Scrapbooking Supplies
Scissors, paper cutter, bone folder
Cardstock
Adhesive – two sided tape, pop dots
Embellishments – lace, ribbon, digital hearts and embellishments printed and cut out, stickers, doilies and book pages
Brown distress ink

Step 1 – Open an 8.5 x 11 document. Set guide lines horizontally and vertically at 4 inches and 8 inches.  Create a heart shape on a separate layer (I constrained the proportions to 3.75 x 3.75 inches).  Duplicate the heart shape.  Move the hearts so the left hand edge is on the 4 inch vertical guide line.  Move them slightly left of the 4 inch  guide line and erase so there is a straight edge for the hinge.  Adhere digital scrapbooking supply paper to each heart using a clipping mask Opt+Ctrl+G (Mac) Ctrl+G (Win). 

Step 2 – Reduce the size of the heart created in Step 1 and attach coordinating digital scrapbooking papers.  Create a few simple embellishments.  Place the hearts and embellishments on the bottom of your document and print on cardstock.

Step 3 – Cut a straight line across the page at the bottom of each heart.  Score at the left edge of the heart.  Fold and cut out the heart leaving the hinge uncut.

Step 4 – Cut out the embellishments and hearts.  Distress all edges.  Decorate the front of the card with embellishments, ribbon, stickers, etc.  Distress a doily and attach to back of card.
