When I was in high school, I wrote a song that our percussion ensemble performed called Variations on a Pow-wow Theme. As I was scrapbooking some pictures from the rehearsals and performances, I started thinking about other things that could be used in new ways – variations on other themes, if you will.
I used the antlers from December’s ScrapSimple Club: Tribal by Elisha Barnett for a frame to help make my photo the focal point of the layout, and I think it works really well. Not something you’d see on every page, but sometimes just a touch of whimsy, a bit of the unexpected is just what a layout needs.
To use an odd-shaped embellishment as a frame, use the Marquee tool (or the Elliptical Marquee tool for roundish items) to select the part of the photo you want to keep. Use the shortcut Shift+Ctrl+I to make everything outside the selection active and then press Delete. You may need to use the Eraser tool to clean up any spots that the Marquee tool missed for odd-shaped frames.
Have fun finding your own variations on photo frames! I’d love to see what you come up with, so be sure to upload your creations to the Scrap Girls Gallery!
