How To Change the Color of Chipboard Embellishments
Note: This tutorial was written using Photoshop CS2.
Have you bought the Chipboard Embellishments but want to customize them to coordinate with your digital scrapbooking layouts? I am going to show you two ways to do just that.
Method Number 1 – Colorizing using the Hue/Saturation Tool
1. Open your software program and open the Chipboard Embellishment you would like to work with. I am using one from the Thanksgiving Chipboard Expressions. Create a new 12x12 300 dpi canvas with a transparent background. Drag and drop the Chipboard Embellishment onto this new canvas.
2. Open the Color Picker Tool and choose the color you would like for the Chipboard Embellishment.
3. Go to Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation (or click Ctrl+U/Cmd+U) to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialogue box. In the bottom right corner, click the "Colorize" box.
This will automatically change the Chipboard Embellishment to the color you chose in the Color Picker.
4. If you want to adjust the color further, use the Saturation and Lightness sliders in the Hue/Saturation dialogue box. Click "OK" when done. You’ve now recolored the Chipboard Embellishment by Colorizing.
Method Number 2 – Adding a Pattern to Chipboard Embellishments
It is very simple to add a pattern to the Chipboard Embellishments using any of the Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking papers. Just follow these easy steps:
1. Open a new 12x12 300 dpi canvas with a transparent background. Open one of the Chipboard Embellishments and drag it onto the new document.
2. Open the background paper of your choice. With the paper as your active document, go to Image> Image Size (Ctrl+Alt+I/Cmd+Opt+I) and change the size of the paper to 3 inches. Click "OK."
3. We are now going to define the paper as a pattern. Go to Edit> Define Pattern. Click "OK" on the dialogue box that appears, leaving the pattern name unchanged.
4. Close the patterned paper by clicking the X in the upper right corner. Caution: Be sure to click "No" when it asks you if you want to save the changes to the document.
5. Go to the new canvas on which you placed the Chipboard Embellishment. Double-click on the Chipboard Embellishment layer or click the small f in the circle at the bottom of the Layers Palette.
6. In the dialogue box that appears, click on the words "Pattern Overlay" to be taken to the options for that. The currently selected pattern will automatically be applied to the embellishment. We will be working with this to retain the chipboard look, yet have the patterned paper show as well.
7. Click the down arrow next to the box showing the pattern. A thumbnail of the background paper you defined as a pattern will be the last one on the list. Click on it to apply it to the embellishment. As before, you will see that the pattern knocks out the chipboard look.
8. In order to bring back the chipboard look, lower the Opacity using the slider above the pattern thumbnail. Play with the Opacity until you get the look you like. You want to have a good balance between being able to see the dimension of the chipboard as well as seeing the patterned paper.
9. When you are satisfied, click "OK."
It’s as easy as that to change the color of Chipboard Embellishments. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
