Digital Scrapbooker Hits the Big Time

Michelle Coleman, a designer for Scrap Girls, LLC (www.scrapgirls.com), will appear on the Sunday, May 22 nd episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” hosted by Ty Pennington.

Michelle and 19 other scrapbook designers from throughout the United States and Canada worked together to complete scrapbooks for the family featured on the show. In just three days, Michelle worked as a part of a team with five other designers in Flagstaff to put the finishing touches on the albums. Using laptops and trying not to blow away in the heavy winds, the six scrapbookers worked away under a big blue tent near the show’s makeup trailer.

The interior designers from the ABC show all stopped by periodically to see what was happening. The team was filmed with both Constance Ramos and Michael Moloney, two members of the show’s design team. Michael took a special interest in what was happening and explained the process in his own words on film. He “made it sound fabulous!” Michelle said.

Dena Cooper, Laura Vanderbeek, Lori Barnhurst, Wendy Morales, and Michelle

The scrapbookers made three albums - a family book and two children's ABC books. They were printed and bound into beautiful coffee table books.

Michelle said: “It's hard to know just how much will air on the show Sunday night. But we are also scheduled to be on the show Monday on “How'd They Do That.

“All in all, quite the amazing experience! We haven't seen the family’s reaction yet. We were invited to have dinner with them after the house was turned over, but our flight was leaving and we couldn’t stay. We were there for 6 days! Saw the whole house built and we even were able to help move in furniture.”

Michelle said she “would definitely do it again! In a heartbeat!”

“I was able to meet (face to face!) some of my online digital friends and I was able to help make a difference in the lives of a wonderful deserving family.  AND, I got to meet Ty!

“It was such an amazing experience to collaborate on a project like this. We have been told by the producers of the show that our books were the most talked about gift by the family.  We'll have to wait for their reaction to our books when the show airs!”

Michelle, a self-proclaimed computer nerd, found digital scrapbooking in December 2004. She is a stay at home mother and self taught graphic artist. Her work has been published in Creating Keepsakes, Legacy Magazine, Memory Makers, and Cantata Books. Watch for her on Sunday, May 22 nd on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and on Monday, May 23rd, How’d They Do That.

Michelle lives in Layton, Utah with her husband, Paul, and her two daughters, Brenna and Lorynn.

The Scrap Girls Scrappiness Society will be hosting chat parties to watch the show together on Sunday, May 22nd and May 23rd. Watch your Scrappiness New Ticker and Lists for more details!

P.S. Guess what just happened? The Salt Lake ABC Affiliate just called Ro to get Michelle's phone number. They are going to interview her so that she can be on the news on Friday and Sunday night! You go, gir!

Our own layout designer, Jan Hicks has done it again! She has come up with a brilliant way to sort your Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking supplies. Jan, who is a self-proclaimed paper scrapper, sorts her own paper supplies by color. So she thought, “Why not sort my digital files that way, too?”

Some of us have tried it and it has made finding our digital/printable files a snap. Here’s how:

  1. Make folders with the different color names.
  2. Next, make sure all of your Scrap Girls Products are named appropriately so that you will be able to know what paper belongs to what designer. You can change the file names to include the designer’s name, the collection or kit name and the product name. This is essential so you are able to give credit where credit is due when posting your layouts in a gallery or submitting them to magazines.
  3. Start dragging and dropping your files into the appropriate colored folders.

The sorting process does take time, but the results are worth it. Think of the endless opportunities when you can design using multiple collections on the same layout, rather than sticking to one single collection.

Worrying about storage? You may want to consider adding an external hard drive to your Christmas or birthday wish-list. You can get a huge amount of graphics on an external hard drive and they are much easier to access than when you put them on CDs. It's a good way to keep your graphics, photographs, and layouts safe and is a trick that professional graphic designers have used for years.

.

This fun layout, Later Gator, was made by Mandy Steward after she created color folders like Jan suggested.

Mandy began the layout by searching in her browns folder for the background pieces. Then she searched under the purples and pinks folder to accent the purples and pinks in her daughter’s shirt. Mandy sorted all of her alphas into one big alpha folder and her embellishments into one big embellishment folder so when it came time to add a title and embellishments to her page, she had a wide range of options available to her.

This color filing system will open whole world for you with your digital and printable scrapbooking graphics. Try it and share your results with us. We’d love to see what you come up with!
