Today's Special of the Day!

Acceptance Collection
Save 30% off this Collection today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Paula Wright. In a short interview with Paula, she shared these comments with us...

I live with my family in Utah where we have really beautiful winters, but by Spring I am always so happy to see snow melting away and the flowers and trees beginning to bloom. I was inspired by the blooming trees in my neighborhood and my darling niece Lexie, who was planning her wedding, while I was designing this collection. For years, I have designed and created wedding gowns as well as doing graphic design. Weddings are such a happy time in our lives. So, I decided to combine two of my favorite things - Spring and weddings in the Acceptance Collection. This collection works great for many occasions, as only the word art is specific to weddings. And, the colors are perfect if you want to create a Scrap Girls layout!

1. When designing a collection what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

This really depends upon the collection and where the inspiration came from. Sometimes I will do all the papers first, but usually, I will do a few embellishments and papers and start working on a layout right away. Doing this helps me figure out what a collection really needs. I like to have a variety of colors in a collection so that it is versatile and can be used to get many different looks from one collection. There always seems to be one or two favorite papers or embellishments that I am drawn to in the end. Word art is often the last thing that I finish up.

2. Are you an early morning designer or do you burn the midnight candle?

I am a night owl. It is only after everyone else has gone to bed and the house is quiet that I get most of my work done.

A Designer's Life: Angela Blanchard

I hadn't cooked with cast iron since I was a kid - and it was with mixed results. Then my husband bought me a Griswold Dutch Oven a few years ago, and I've become hooked on cooking with cast iron ever since. I dug up his aunt's old cornbread pans, and I scrubbed, seasoned, and baked with them next. Then a friend gave me his mother's old griddle, and my husband purchased a skillet for me as well. (He adamantly supports all my cooking endeavors.)

Well, my son is in school today... he doesn't want to miss a day of school since it's the last week of the school year, and he is now in what he qualifies as "fun week" - lots of special activities and great fun to be had before the end of the school year next week. Hubby has just left for work; he'll be gone until Friday night. However, he is lucky because he is scheduled to fly to Kochi (southern part of Japan), away from what's happening in Northern Japan right now.

Back to Basics

The Digital Scrapbooker's Survival Kit

Starting to scrapbook digitally can feel slightly intimidating. It is wonderful to think that you can preserve your family heritage in a way that allows speed, creativity, no mess, and the ability to share the results with as many people as you wish with a click of your mouse. And yet it may feel slightly overwhelming to think of everything you need to learn to create the type of layouts that you admire.

What Are Convention Classes?

In the past few years, Scrap Girls has held two Digital Scrap Link Conventions in Salt Lake City, Utah. These have been incredible events for all who attended. Not only were you able to meet the Scrap Girls team in real life, you were able to meet and get to know other women who have a love for digital scrapbooking.

Mother's Day Cards

Mother's Day is approaching quickly! Out of curiosity, I stopped by the stationery aisle of my local grocery store to check out the selection of cards to celebrate motherhood. I quickly made the decision to come home and make my own cards. With my digital scrapbooking supplies, I can design and print any kind of Mother's Day card I want at a fraction of the price!

Story Time: Digitally Scrapbooking Your Daily Routine

No doubt, journaling plays an important role in digital scrapbooking. It supports your photos and helps tell the story behind them. Yet many of us set aside this important step until the page is done. Journaling doesn't have to be difficult or time consuming. It can be as simple as listing the "who, what, where, and when" of the photo - who is in the photo, what the event was, where the photo was taken, and when it occurred. It can be a just a phrase or two detailing your thoughts about your photo – or a paragraph or two giving the fuller story. Plus, you can also use famous quotes, song lyrics, or poems to capture the sentiment of your scrapbook page.

Photography Friday: Documenting Relationships

Today I'd like to talk about documenting relationships in photography. If you were to look at the majority of my digital scrapbooking layouts you'd find that almost all of them have either posed photos or photos of just one of my children. Recently, I realized that I might be documenting their lives and the things that they do, but I'm not really capturing their relationships with each other. They have such sweet and loving relationships with each other that I really need to change that.

Technology Saturday: Tagging Your Scrapping Supplies with Adobe Bridge

Last week, I talked about tagging your digital scrapbooking supplies using Adobe Photoshop Elements. This week, I'd like to show you how to tag using Adobe Bridge, which is included in full versions of Photoshop and any of Adobe's Creative Suite packages.

Tips From The Pros

Using Shapes to Create Contrast

Have you ever finished a layout only to feel that something is missing or that it could somehow be improved? I know I certainly have. When I feel that my layout needs a boost, I like using shapes to create contrast on my digital scrapbooking layouts. An easy way to utilize this design concept is to remember "opposites attract."

Layouts about Mom

How do you put everything your mom means to you in one layout? Maybe it's not possible... maybe you need an entire digital scrapbooking album to express how you feel about your mom, what she means to you, or to describe her personality. Maybe you can't even decide where to begin!

Adding Texture to a Photo

One of my very favorite things about digital scrapbooking is the ability to take an ordinary photo, or even an extraordinary photo, and make it even more eye-catching by using ScrapSimple Paper Templates to add texture and dimension. Let's explore a few options.

Designer Do-Over: Ang Campbell

I thought it would be fun to dig through my Scrap Girls Gallery and find the very first digital scrapbooking layout I ever posted and then, re-do it!

Creating Your Own Graduation Announcements

That time of year is upon us - high schools, colleges, even kindergartens and preschools will soon be gearing up to celebrate the completion of the school year and the long-awaited graduation ceremonies. Many different companies offer package deals on designing and printing your graduation announcements for a fee. But as a digital scrapbooker, you have the know-how to create your own graduation announcements! Or at least you will - after reading this tutorial. Why pay someone else for something that you can do yourself?

Games

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Contests

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
