Digital Scrapbooking Layout by April Martell
"So Lovely" by April Martell

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I added a bit of extra dimension to the photos in Elisha Barnett's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Bless This Nest Mini by manipulating their drop shadows. The PSD files already have drop shadows applied to most of the embellishment layers. First, place the drop shadow on its own layer. To do this, right-click on the fx icon in the photo mask's layer and choose "Create Layer" from the list that pops up. With the new drop shadow layer selected, choose Edit> Transform> Warp. Pull the corners out just a touch for lightly lifted edges. You can play with the handles and corners until you get a look you like. When you're happy with the look, click the check mark in the top menu bar to finalize your transformation.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout by Amy Flanagan
"Auntie's Hat" by Amy Flanagan

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For this layout, I wanted a very bright, fun, happy theme to match the joyful time we had playing with Auntie's hat. However, there was a very large, dark, distracting purse strap on her right shoulder. No matter where I moved the photo on the layout, my eye kept being drawn to that strap. Cropping the photo to remove the strap made the whole photo too tight on their faces. The solution was to hide the strap under an embellishment cluster and under a portion of the title. Now, magically, no one will ever know the photo imperfection was there!

Digital Scrapbooking Layout by Joyce Schardt
"The Great Wall of China" by Joyce Schardt

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I love seeing new places through the lens of a camera. It helps me focus on the little things that reflect the essence of the location. My travel photos do not include many shots of me personally; instead, they reflect the bits and pieces that catch my eye. When climbing the Great Wall of China on an extremely smoggy day, these cheerful red tags fluttering in the breeze caught my attention. I duplicated the red tag photo and applied the Linear Burn Blending mode to the bottom layer for an aged appearance. Then I used a mask on the top layer to brush around the tags, thereby retaining their bright red color.

12 Days of Stories

Tell Us Your Story!

Scrapbooking is all about telling your story with pictures and words. This Christmas season we want to give you a chance to tell your story to the world! It has become our annual tradition at Scrap Girls to turn our Newsletter over to our customers at Christmastime and publish their Christmas stories and layouts. As part of our 12 Days of Christmas Story Contest, we want you to tell us the story behind your most beloved Christmas decoration. Your story could appear in our Newsletter and you might win a prize!

This year, we want you to tell us the story behind your most meaningful Christmas decoration or ornament. Do you have something special that you bring out every year to brighten your fireplace mantel or Christmas table? Or an ornament that has a special meaning to you because of where it came from? Maybe it's a story of something that has been handed down through your family? Or perhaps it's something that you acquired more recently that started an unexpected chain of events? Possibly it's something handmade and seeing it each year brings back your memories of the person who made it? We all have a favorite treasure packed carefully away in storage all year waiting to make its annual December appearance. We want to hear about yours!

We will select the best stories and publish them in our newsletter from December 13-24. Just to keep things interesting, we're not going to tell anyone they have been selected ahead of time. You'll just have to hop out of bed every morning, rush to your computer, and open up your Scrap Girls Newsletter with all the wonder of a child on Christmas morning and look to see if your story was published that day!

Everyone who submits a story will get a JIF 6 kit that coordinates with this year theme! That's right - you get a prize just for entering! This JIF 6 will only be given to our story tellers. It will not be available in the Boutique. You want it? Then write a story and send it in!

Each writer of a story that gets published in our Newsletter will be entered into our prize drawing. The grand prize winner will receive a $100 Visa gift card and two other lucky winners will receive $25 gift certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Here are the Submission Guidelines, so start those creative juices flowing!

The deadline for submissions is Midnight (ET), Monday, December 2nd. Email your story to [email protected] with a subject line of My 12 Days Story. With your email, please include the following attachments:

  • Your story: Story length - maximum of 300 words. Your story must be true (to the best of your knowledge), and it must tell a story/event centered around this year's theme. One entry per person. Send your story in MS Word or something similar. At the top of your story, include your name, Forum username (if you have one), your mailing address, and your email address. At the bottom of your story, write a few sentences about yourself - where you live, what you do, your family, your job, your hobbies, etc.

  • Scrap Girls publication release (download it here). Sign this release and return it with your submission.

  • One image/layout (optional): You may submit one image or layout that is related to your story - but only one, so make it good! Images should be no more than 300 pixels long on either width or height. If you submit a layout, we need two sizes: a 300-pixel image (72 dpi) and a 600-pixel image (72 dpi). Please show off our beautiful Scrap Girls products in your layout and include a supply list of products used (along with links to those products in the Boutique). Even if the product is retired, please include it in the list (without a link). By the way, submitting a photo or layout will not drastically improve the likelihood of a story being published, but it's a nice accompaniment to give our readers.

We reserve the right to edit the story as needed for clarity, grammar, punctuation, length, etc., though we will make every effort not to change the meaning of what you write.

We look forward to hearing your story as we launch our annual 12 Days of Christmas celebration!

It's time for our 8th Annual Cookie Recipe Card Exchange and you're invited! We have a special, free recipe card template to help you get started. We love cookies, and we love getting new cookie recipes to try, so this year, all participants will receive a sweet little Scrap Girls Boutique gift just for joining in.

Here's how to join in the fun:

  • Design a 4x6-inch recipe card (at 300dpi) using mostly Scrap Girls products. Use one of your favorite holiday cookie, candy, or sweet treat recipes - something "tried and true" is preferred.

  • All skill levels are encouraged to participate! If this is your very first time to try your hand at digital scrapbooking or if you’re a pro, please join in the fun!

  • When you design your card, avoid putting any text within 1/4 inch of the edges. Anything close to the edges can get cut off when the card is printed.

  • Place your name or Scrap Girls Forum username somewhere on the recipe card (small text is fine).

  • Save your design as a JPG file, with a file name that includes your name or ScrapGirls Forum user name (for example, my file might be called aprilshowers_gingercrinkles.jpg.) We want to know who made what!

  • Attach your card to an email and send it to [email protected]. Please include your first and last name in the body of your email. A confirmation will be emailed to each person who sends a recipe card so they know their card was received. Please allow 48 hours for confirmation.

  • Cards MUST be received by Midnight (ET) on Tuesday, December 10.

  • Unfortunately, if you don't send in a recipe card, you will not be able to get a copy of all the cards. No exceptions. Your recipe card is your ticket to all the fun!

  • We ask that you not post your recipe card in your Gallery, Facebook, or anywhere else until the swap is over. This way, we can all be surprised by the cards we get! You can post your own card in the Gallery or anywhere else anytime after December 12.

  • Please don’t sell or give away any of the finished cards on blogs, emails, etc. You may print some or all the recipe cards as a gift for someone you know personally, but wide-scale distribution or sale is not allowed, as per our commercial use terms, which can be read in full here.

  • You can submit more than one card, if you wish - the more the merrier!

  • On or before December 12, each participant will receive the links (via email - the same way that links come when you buy Scrap Girls products) to download the recipe card files. Participants will need to include their First Name, Last Name and email address for us to send them the recipes.

- April Martell (April Showers)

December's Forum Game: BINGO

Join us for an exciting game of Scrap Girls BINGO! Just pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD_your Scrap Girls Forum username" by Monday, December 2nd at Midnight (ET) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, December 3rd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Forum Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

December Monthly Layout Contest: It's December and our last Monthly Layout Contest of 2013! Did you know that in Holland on the night of December 5th that children leave clogs or shoes out when they go to bed for Sinterklaas to fill with presents and sweets? This month, we are focusing on SHOES! We'd love to see your layouts focusing on shoes - any kind, type or color! You might have a funny "shoe" story or want to show off a new pair. Maybe you still have your baby shoes or a pair so old they are falling apart. Anything goes, as long as it involves shoes!

Please post your layouts in the December Monthly Layout Gallery by December 31st before Midnight (ET), and you could win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Be sure to add your product credits to the description area or in the EXIF properties in order to be eligible for the prize. Good luck!
