A New Addition
When my children were younger, they constantly asked if we could get a dog. As the mother of four small children, I was exhausted from taking care of the responsibilities I already had and couldn't commit to taking on the responsibility of another "little one" to care for.
I tried to postpone what I viewed as the inevitable by telling my boys (the oldest of the four) that when they were eight and ten years old, we could discuss getting a dog because they would be old enough to share some of the responsibilities of caring for it, so it wouldn't all fall on me.
Fast-forward a couple years and when my boys finally reached those designated ages, our family was not in a stable situation to be able to get a dog. Our house was for sale, and we were semi-unemployed. So I explained to the children that as soon as we sold our house and were in a stable place again, we would pursue fulfilling that promise of getting a dog. I don't think any of us anticipated how long that would take. But it's now more than four-and-a-half years later, and we are finally settling into our new home - with a fenced yard!
A good friend of mine called me up about a month ago and said she had just acquired a new three-month-old puppy that she was planning on keeping unless we wanted it. After deliberating for a bit, we decided to have the puppy come over to our house for a visit to see if she was a good fit. And she never left.
We are all adjusting to the extra work it takes to have a dog, and we're learning what to do and what not to do, right alongside the dog. But the joy and happiness that we feel from adding this new, adorable, snuggly puppy to our family far surpasses any inconveniences we have. Welcome to our family, Ginger!
