Creating A Scene
Article written using GIMP and Photoshop Elements 6 with Windows Vista
As soon as I saw the kit Treasured Heirlooms Collection Mini by Cindy Rohrbough, I knew I wanted to create a scene - literally! Cindy's kit includes many different old-fashioned elements, perfect for layouts with vintage photos. Using those elements, I created the illusion of an old room with a photo, title, and journaling - framed and "hanging" on the wall.
First, I selected two background papers with small print that I could use as the "wallpaper" on the wall. To imitate a beveled strip of wood separating two types of wallpaper, I used two thin strips of a third paper. I left the top two-thirds of the page for the photo, title, and journaling.

Next, I wanted to create the illusion of a piece of furniture which could hold an old typewriter and other elements from Cindy's kit. One paper from Treasured Heirlooms Collection Mini looks like a set of four doors, so I used that as the bottom of the "buffet." For the top of the buffet, I wanted a paper with the look of wood with the grain going horizontally. I used a paper from Cindy Rohrbough's Rustic Charm Paper Super Mini to achieve the look.

To give my buffet a more three-dimensional look, I used the Dodge/Burn Tool to darken the edges of the papers. The image below shows where to find this tool in both GIMP and Photoshop Elements 6.

The Dodge Tool lightens, and the Burn Tool darkens, so I selected Burn. I used just the edge of a large soft brush (fuzzy circle with radius of 300 pixels) set at 30% Opacity. Below, you can see the difference just a few strokes along the edges of both papers made. You can play around with the settings and strokes until you achieve the look you want.

Finally, I clustered the elements on the buffet and added drop shadows. The default shadow settings made the elements look like they were floating off the buffet, so I used drop shadows that went almost entirely to the left (X) with very little shadow going down (Y). Here are the settings I used for the drop shadows in GIMP: Offset X -25, Offset Y 2, Blur radius 45, Color black (000000), Opacity 40%. My page was ready for the photo, title, and journaling to be hung on the "wall" above my virtual buffet. I had created a scene!

This was so much fun! Why don't you try to create a scene? I'd love to see your designs. Upload your pages to the Scrap Girls Newsletter Tutorial Gallery so we can all enjoy them!
