My Dollhouse
I'm writing this a few weeks before Christmas, my most favorite time of year. My mom and dad would always try and make Christmas as special as possible. They were usually on a tight budget, so they would think of creative ways to make the holidays more magical as well as add an element of surprise. Like many, my mom would decorate to the nines, bake an assortment of yummy cookies for us to leave for Santa, and would fill our stockings with all kinds of goodies. Our friends and family would come over Christmas Eve for a potluck dinner, and we all played Charades and exchanged gifts.
Christmas Eve was also the one night I would happily go to sleep on time because Christmas morning couldn't come soon enough. My brother and I usually woke up first, and we would crawl into our parents' bed, tugging at them to wake them up. I loved the feeling of the four of us all cuddled up, snug as a bug. My mom would make blueberry and banana pancakes, and then we would sit around and go through our stockings before opening our presents from Santa.
But my favorite part of Christmas Day was when we would have a treasure hunt for one of our gifts. It was such a thrill not knowing what I was getting but at the same time knowing there was something amazing waiting for me.
The best treasure hunt ever and my most cherished gift was when I was five years old. It was Christmas Day in 1970, and we lived on a small farm in Canyon Country, California. My dad wrote out the clues, and I used to get such a kick out of them because they always rhymed. I would start by opening a gift that looked like any other, but inside I would find the first clue. I would get butterflies in my tummy and was so excited and eager to start the journey following the trail laid out for me.
It turns out my mom saved those clues every year. She recently found them in a box, and I was so happy when I found my favorite one. It immediately brought me back:
Note 1:
This box is too little for your prize
You'll need some clues to open your eyes
Too soon to be pulling your hair
Take a look under the chair.Note 2:
You're into the hunt, starting to rock,
You'll find the next clue under a clock.Note 3:
Now it's outside you must go,
One more clue awaits you
On the trunk of the tree
You scrapped your knee
Unpin your final clue.Note 4:
The gift you seek is very near
Standing on a table
Cross the yard
And there it is just inside the stable.
It was a dollhouse – a beautiful dollhouse that my dad had made for me and filled with precious, miniature, antique furniture and all sorts of treasures. I was beside myself, overwhelmed with joy! I was too young to realize what a labor of love it was, but I must have known on some level because to this day, it is still my favorite gift.
This Christmas I plan to share this wonderful tradition with my goddaughters, although they are both teenagers now. But I figure they are never too old to enjoy the wonder and adventure that comes from a good old-fashioned treasure hunt.

Favorite Product I've Designed:

Value Pack: Treasured Heirlooms
Many of the products in this Value Pack: Treasured Heirlooms were inspired from my surroundings growing up as well as my love for all things vintage. Not only was my childhood home furnished with many beautiful antiques, but my favorite gift as a child was the dollhouse that was filled with these special miniature treasures. I had so much fun having my own treasure hunt of sorts, searching for all kinds of unique finds for this collection.
