The Second-Hand Queen
Once upon a time, when I was in college, someone asked the well-dressed graduate student at work where she shopped. Her answer? Goodwill and other second-hand shops! That very weekend I checked out all the stores. Surely if second-hand was good enough for this friend I looked up to, it was more than good enough for me.
I quickly realized that if some of my purchases were second-hand, I could have many times more clothes, shoes, and accessories than I could realistically afford if purchased new. If I shopped carefully at the right types of stores, I could have higher quality and fancier name brands than I could have otherwise. (I am so out-of-tune with name brands that I rely on listening to a fashionista friend.) One of my favorite finds was a brand new Brighton® purse at a church garage sale!
About 10 years ago, I realized that I was being "green" all these years and began to share my second-hand love with more and more friends without embarrassment. Not only am I helping clothe my family (yes, my boys, too), I am helping the environment and local business! The city we live in doesn't have a huge variety of clothing shops and what we do have is limited in selection. I was thrilled when a high-end consignment shop opened downtown about three years ago. I find something neat almost every time I go and am especially drawn to their shoes and jewelry. The excellent children's consignment shop here branched out into adult clothing as well, and I grabbed a wool winter coat this year for $21.
Most of these stores arrange their merchandise in ROYGBIV (red, orange yellow, green blue, indigo, violet) rainbow format, which is a feast for my eyes! I head right for the greens and purples. I'm also a sucker for oranges lately. Maybe you would think a bright redhead would want to try to blend in a little, but my line of thinking is to go with the flow - loud hair, loud clothes!
Because it's currently winter where I live, I decided to highlight some of my favorite winter finds on the layout below. I will freely confess I have a bit of a wool fetish, brought on in part by a book I purchased on recycling wool sweaters into craft projects. I still haven't felted any of the sweaters for craft projects, but one of the $3.50 wool cardigans is now my favorite sweater ever! It keeps me cozily warm while scrapping away in the cold Iowa winters.

"This is my current favorite product I've created. Why? It's new, it's different, and I like that it mimics the traditional scrapbooking supplies I started out with in 1999. I have never done Pocket Life-style layouts before now, and I am really enjoying this new way of scrapbooking! It's quick, easy, and quite attractive."
