School Year Scrapping
Article written using Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Windows Vista
Many of the events we scrap are one-time events, like weddings and vacations. Other events happen yearly, like holidays and birthdays, but are still confined to a set period in time, a few days or a week. And then there are those events that take place over a long period of time. These may include documenting success in a new fitness program or tracking pregnancy. For me, one such event is scrapping the school year for each of my children.
Every school year involves the same types of photos - first day of school, picture day, last day of school, special projects, field trips (if I get to chaperone), special event days, like crazy hair day, etc., and if I put off scrapping all these photos until the end of the school year, it can be pretty overwhelming.
One method that helps me stay current in scrapping these photos is to pick one collection and a set of layout templates and stick to those supplies throughout the school year.
Armi Custodio's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Clustered and Clean includes a set of 10 layout templates with a variety of photo spots. They come as layered PSD files, so I can use them as they are, or add or subtract photo masks as needed to accommodate my scrapping needs.
This year for my daughter's school year, I chose Armi's School Is Cool Collection, my daughter loves owls this year, so the little owl embellishment and paper is a perfect fit. Now each time we take school-related photos, I grab a template and open up my collection and get them scrapped.
Aside from enabling me to keep current with my daughter's school year, I have found that using this method also opens up some options when it comes time to assemble my albums and print my layouts. My first option is to include each layout in chronological order in my yearly album. The unified look of using the same collection throughout the school year sends a signal to anyone looking through my album that this is a school-related layout and which grade it belongs with.
Another option I am considering is to make a school album just for my daughter. This would be an ongoing project that I would add to during her school years and print up for her when she graduates. I really like the idea that each grade would be visually cohesive, and her whole school career would be in one location for her to look back on.
Of course, a big advantage of digi-scrapping is that you never "use up" your supplies. I can take one collection and a set of templates and reuse them over and over to scrap a full school year of events. By choosing one collection and a set of layout templates, I can stay on top of my long-term scrapping.
