Girlie Grunge

I love grunge! Today I want to share a couple of my favorite ways to add grunge to a layout. I have chosen to do an art journal-style layout. Not only do they lend themselves well to grunge, but they are also very forgiving. My page today is going to focus on "girlie grunge."
My interpretation of grunge is messy, artsy, freestyle – but definitely not dirty. It may involve paint splashes, torn papers, aged tape, scratches, broken elements, etc. - elements that add texture and interest. For girlie grunge, I add color, pink, glitter, and lace. I find a lot of Amanda Fraijo-Tobin's collections lend themselves exceptionally well to this style.
I will be primarily using Amanda Fraijo-Tobin's Visionary Collection Biggie. It is full of bright, vibrant color and contains lots of painted, blended effects – perfect for girlie grunge. I chose to display a piece of personal art as the colors worked brilliantly with the papers in the Visionary Collection.
I decided that even though I liked the paper #2 I was using for my background, it wasn't feminine and pretty enough for the lotus flower I was displaying. I decided to add some more flowers. The paper #11 that I chose, however, was not quite right either. It was too much, so I clipped paper #2 to a page from Amanda's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Absolutely Blended to soften the paper and used a Blending Mode (Darker Color) to get the edgier tone I wanted.
Next, I used Amanda's ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Bokeh 6401 to add a little more color with softness, and I adjusted the depth using the "Pin Light" Blending Mode.
Now that I was happy with my background, I used Bespoke Collection to add a bit of bling, Brush Set: Essential Grungy Corners to anchor the page, and Brush Set: Grungy Lace Alpha Biggie to add some further girlie grunge. I kept the journaling simple to work within the busy framework.
This was such a fun page to make, and the personal topic allowed me to get personal with my layout, too, and really make it my own. I liked playing around with "roughing" things up with blending and brushwork and then toning it back down with soft elements like lace and glitter. You might be surprised just how much you like the results! I look forward to seeing what you come up with, so post to the Scrap Girls Gallery so we can all be inspired!

High Noon Crop
Wednesday, January 16th - 12 Noon ET
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 12 Noon ET for the High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On January 16th, we'll do a Font Challenge. Use a font that you haven't used before in your layout. If you need some font inspiration, check out the fonts in the Boutique.
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!

January's Forum Game: Jumpstart January!
It's time to kick off the new year with some fun and a focus on scrapbooking! Join us on Scrap Girls Forum for "Jumpstart January!" This is a game and challenge that focuses on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little "speedbumps" of life. When the month is over you'll have completed several layouts and been treated to some fun along the way.
A Welcoming Committee Member will post a task each Monday through Saturday from January 1-31. The tasks will be formatted in a LARGE PURPLE FONT for ease of locating them in the game thread as it grows. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses or gallery posting. Read each daily task carefully to see what is required of you.
Those who complete all the required tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59 pm (ET) January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete all the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Each person who completes a layout will be entered – once for each completed challenge page - into a drawing for one of three $3 gift certificates.
