How It All Began
In 2004, I was teaching fifth grade and had to prepare students for a very important writing test. Each day, they would work on writing assignments, which meant I needed creative writing prompts. Of course, I found many sites online and continually tried to find new story starters that would be interesting to my students. In my search, I also found sites with printable bookplates and bookmarks. I was thrilled as these little pieces of art could be used to get my students even more interested in reading and writing. One of the sites I found had a large selection of printables, including paper and stickers for a very cute scrapbook. I printed some of these for my students and they loved them, so I looked for more. At that point, the term "digital scrapbooking" was still unfamiliar to me, but in a short while, that would all change.
That Christmas, my sons gave me a Hewlett Packard® all-in-one printer/scanner/copier. That was a great gift in itself, but it was packaged with a scrapbooking program that looked very interesting! This little program allowed me to choose from a variety of backgrounds, embellishments, and letters, put my scrapbook page together, and then print it. I decided that summer to make my first digital scrapbook and create a layout to record our activities every day. I used all the resources included in the scrapbooking program and soon learned how to manipulate the pages and create some of my own very amateurish designs. I really enjoyed working with this program and was proud of the little beginner's scrapbook I put together, but soon wanted more.
I started searching online for "scrapbooking backgrounds" and found freebies at several places, including Scrap Girls. The backgrounds and embellishments I found were of such high quality, Scrap Girls stuck out in my mind. I started reading the Message Boards and was determined to learn more about this "digital scrapbooking" thing.
And that's how I discovered digital scrapbooking and Scrap Girls!
The layout below is one of my first "self-designed" digital scrapbook pages. I was so excited when I found the Styles Palette in Photoshop Elements. And the "special effect" brushes were amazing as they automatically changed size as I dragged the mouse across my paper. Looking back now, I smile and see how far I've come in my design work. However basic and awkward the design aspect of this scrapbook is, it was a great way to learn my craft and record a very slow, but special summer with my boys.

From Durin:
"I love monochromatic collections because texture and design become so important. This little collection has a lot of interesting textures and details that would be normally overlooked because of the neutral color. This collection makes me feel peaceful and in touch with nature. It reminds me to slow down and really look at the little things around me."

On January 2 we'll do a White Space Challenge! Create a layout using white space. This "negative" or blank space guides the eye to the important areas of your page. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!

January's Forum Game: Jumpstart January!
It's time to kick off the new year with some fun and a focus on scrapbooking! Join us on Scrap Girls Forum for "Jumpstart January!" This is a game and challenge that focuses on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little "speedbumps" of life. When the month is over you'll have completed several layouts and been treated to some fun along the way.
A Welcoming Committee Member will post a task each Monday through Saturday from January 1-31. The tasks will be formatted in a LARGE PURPLE FONT for ease of locating them in the game thread as it grows. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses or gallery posting. Read each daily task carefully to see what is required of you.
Those who complete all the required tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59 pm (ET) January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete all the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Each person who completes a layout will be entered – once for each completed challenge page - into a drawing for one of three $3 gift certificates.
