Story Winner #12: The Arrival of Baby Jesus
Memories of Christmas-past are always present in my mind this time of year since we were a foster family for 21 years. We had many wonderful Christmases with some of the most beautiful children, but one Christmas is ever-present in my mind.
We had one foster child in our home that Christmas, Chris, a little boy whom we were going to adopt. This would be the second Christmas he had celebrated with us, but the first when he was old enough to enjoy it. We had decorated our Christmas tree, much to his delight, and we were in the process of displaying our much-worn and well-loved Nativity. One by one, Chris lovingly unwrapped each figure from the storage box, and with those sweet little hands, he placed each figure in the stable where he thought they should go.
Chris was delighted with his arrangement of Mary and Joseph, the cattle, the sheep, the shepherds and the three wise men. I thought only I knew something was missing, but I was wrong. Suddenly he said, "Mommy, there's no Baby Jesus! We can't have a stable without Baby Jesus!"
Yes, Baby Jesus had been broken the year before. The figure was in pieces, and I couldn't repair it. I had meant to replace it but somehow the season had sneaked up on me.
Christmas Day came, and I still had not replaced the Baby Jesus – I guess I got caught up in the Christmas rush that year. Much to our surprise, the Nativity was the first thing Chris looked at on Christmas morning – not the toys, but the Nativity.
"No Baby Jesus, Mommy – Santa didn't bring us a Baby Jesus."
I felt terrible. I had let him down. I turned his attention to the toys Santa had brought.
A couple of hours later, the Department of Social Services called us. "We have an infant who is going to be released from the hospital in an hour. He's nine months old and in a full body cast. Will you take him?"
I didn't have to think for more than a second. It was Christmas! "Yes, yes, we will!"
We left immediately for the hospital to find the social worker and three police officers waiting for us at the hospital. The police were present because they feared that the parents might try and obstruct the placement of their son with foster care even though they were the ones who had caused the baby to be put into a full body cast. The police walked us to our car, and we strapped the baby into his car seat with great difficulty.
Suddenly, a little voice from the seat beside our new foster child cried out, "Mommy, Mommy, you found the Baby Jesus!"
Ah yes, my favorite Christmas memory.

About the Author:
Sara Arell: My family and I moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, when my husband retired from the Air Force 23 years ago. We were foster parents while active duty and continued our love of foster care when we moved here. We had over 30 foster children during our years as foster parents, and we loved them all. My husband is a police officer with the City of Hendersonville, and I'm a mom. We have four children and 9 grandchildren now, and they are the loves of our lives. I've been a member of Scrap Girls since 2006, and it is definitely my favorite hobby! I love my happy little purple place! My layout that accompanies this story highlights the angel Gabriel because the foster baby shared that same name. Due to confidentiality agreements, I am unable to feature our foster children in this layout, but I will always hold them near to my heart.
