Story Winner #10: A Little Christmas Magic
My brother, Gary, and I still talk about the night we saw Santa Claus. The Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny came to our house, too, but we never got to see them.
It happened the same night we went to the Community Christmas Party. We lived in the country and were looking forward to seeing our friends and neighbors, not to mention wondering what present we would get in the gift exchange. Grandma helped me dress while Mom got Gary ready to go. He didn't even complain when Mom scrubbed his face and ears. Because it was a special event, Gary and I wore our brand new, matching sweaters from Grandma.
We couldn't wait to get there, but Dad had to drive cautiously, slowly, on the icy roads. Finally, we arrived and stamped the snow off our shoes as we walked into the Community Center. The grown-ups were singing Christmas carols, the boys were running back and forth in the middle of the room, and the girls were standing by the piano watching the lady's fingers dance across the keys.
After the singing was finished, Santa came stomping into the hall. Most of us knew it wasn't really Santa, just one of his helpers. (I thought he looked a lot like my friend Lynn's dad.) All eyes were on the big cloth sack that was slung over his back. Inside were goodie bags that Santa handed out to each child. Each sack had an apple, some ribbon candy, and a candy cane.
Then, after Santa left, each child got to choose a gift from under the Christmas tree. Every kid hoped to get the gift that held the Life Savers® pack with a gazillion Life Savers® candy rolls! One family always brought it for the gift exchange. The candy package folded up like a book - and it was the best present ever! I don't remember what I got but it wasn't as exciting as the Life Savers® pack. When the party was over, the grown-ups wished everyone a Merry Christmas.
At home, Mom tucked Gary and me into our beds, turned out the light, and left the room. Soon afterwards, we heard a noise. Our heads popped up from the pillows, and we looked out the window. We didn't see anything. Then we heard the noise again!
"Ho, Ho, Ho!"
Suddenly, he popped up right by the window... Santa!
We jumped out of bed and rushed over to the window, but he was gone. Wow! We saw Santa! He came to our house and we saw him!
We ran out of our room and went scurrying through the house screaming, "Mom, Dad, Grandma, we saw Santa! Right outside our window! Where's Dad? We want to tell him - we saw Santa!"

About the Author:
Joanne Johnson: My husband and I live in southeastern Idaho where the winters are cold and snowy. Last winter, we went to Arizona and did the "snowbird" thing. We are staying here this winter, and I'm looking forward to it because we belong to a group of retired people who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. There is always something fun to do whether it's sunny or snowy. I enjoy teaching computer classes and have even taught a couple classes on basic online scrapbooking. Most of my time is spent working on the computer but I also enjoy beading, painting, and learning new things.
