Story Winner #7: A Whole Forest of Trees
My story will probably be different than most. My husband and I live thousands of miles away from our family and have no children - so we need to think up creative ways to celebrate Christmas and make new traditions of our own out here in California. (Our family lives in Pennsylvania and South Carolina.) We always schedule our annual visit back East in October so we can enjoy the fall colors. Flying during the holidays is something we'd rather avoid.
We usually take a short driving trip for Thanksgiving and find new and exciting restaurants for dinner. Then, on Christmas Day, my husband always works so that his co-workers with young children can spend the day with them. We have Christmas dinner when he gets home.
In the early fall of 2003, for no apparent reason, I decided that I wanted my Christmas tree to be decorated with nothing but angels. This was totally out of the blue, since I was never particularly attracted to angels. But the idea was strong and wouldn't leave me alone, so I dragged out my ornaments and collected up all the angels. I bought more as soon as the stores started carrying them, and I made a bunch of paper angels using my clip art, scrapbooking paper, and whatever else I could find to fill up the tree.
One day as I was in the craft store looking for materials to make more angels, I saw a little stick tree decorated with lights and Halloween theme ornaments. What a great idea! Initially, I thought I would buy a small stick tree and make one like the one I saw in the store. Then suddenly it hit me! Why not just put up the regular tree early and decorate it for Halloween? So I bought some webs, fake spiders, and purple and orange lights. I made a lot of ornaments from clip art I found online. It was creepy - and wonderful!
But then I thought, "Why stop here?" So I went out and bought leaf garlands and lots of fall decorations and made a fall harvest tree. After Thanksgiving, up went the angels on another tree. But I didn't stop there. Multicolor shiny ornaments, noisemakers, and party hats made a wonderful New Year's tree. I even found little plastic champagne glasses in the wedding section in the craft store and put them on the tree. And after that, red lights and heart ornaments made a festive Valentine's Day tree.
So ever since that inspired year, I've been decorating five trees each holiday season. To add to the fun, I invite friends over to help me. We have a delicious lunch and sing along with my Christmas mix CDs in the process. It's so wonderful to create new holiday traditions when living so far away from family.
Now that people know I have an angel tree, they give me angel ornaments on a regular basis. These days, the tree is so full, there's hardly enough room for all my beautiful angels. My BFF gave me some boy angels, because she noticed that there were few boys on the tree. Guess it's because boys are not usually that angelic!
I encourage anyone who routinely finds herself far from loved ones during the holidays to adopt the "five tree tradition." It's tons of fun and a great way to share the joy of the holidays with friends and neighbors.

Jeanne Bertolina: I live with my adorable husband of 32 years and my cat, Sophie, in a small town just southeast of San Francisco. I have worked in some way in the field of publications most of my career. I have so many hobbies I can hardly count them. But most of them involve either paper crafting or digital art and scrapping. Recently, I started digital art journaling. I'm sort of on hiatus from work right now and eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next great thing. I'm currently working on a website and plan to figure out this social networking thing before the end of the year. I can't wait to see who I'll meet!
