Story Winner #5: Christmas Came Early
Tuesday, December 22, 1981
Scott came home tonight. It's so nice to have him home again. In fact, it's just wonderful! He hugged and hugged Mom, then Dad, then me, then each of the girls in the family and Grandma. There were 20 of us there to meet him, so it was really neat. This Christmas season has been so wonderful already. And it can't help but be even better with Scott home. Mom and Dad are just floating on air.
Yes, 20 of us – mother, father, grandmother, sisters, spouses, and children of assorted ages and sizes – piled into our cars and headed to the airport to greet this son, grandson, brother, and uncle who had gone to Alaska for a job months earlier. He had fallen in love with that wild, untamed land and decided to stay a while. But on that night in 1981, he was coming home for the holidays, and we were filled with the anticipation and excitement of having him home again.
It was tradition in our family for all of us who were able to go to the airport to meet and greet loved ones coming home or to send them off on a trip. So there we were, en masse, early enough to watch planes come in and anxiously waiting for the plane to land.
Finally! There he was, coming through the door into the waiting area. And there we all were, hugging and laughing, crying and blocking traffic big time! How any other passengers got through to their loved ones must have been a job for them. Eventually, we all ended up in the middle of the waiting area with the grown-ups standing in a big circle and the children celebrating somewhere around us.
And then it happened. Christmas came early. In that magical moment, time stood still. The anticipation and excitement bubbled to overflowing in my heart, spilling out love, peace, and contentment, filling me from head to toe. The joy and magic of the Christmas season fell softly around me, leaving warm fuzzies everywhere.
I have no idea how long we all stood there laughing, catching up, and loving being together, but we finally found ourselves standing there just looking at each other with big grins on our faces and no more words needing to be said.
Time began again when one of the brothers-in-law suggested that we go home. We all laughed and gathered our children. As we were leaving, I happened to see a woman sitting off to one side of the room, smiling and watching us. I would love to have known her thoughts about the scene she had just witnessed.
An event of the heart happened on that night, December 22, 1981. The rest of our celebrations were wonderful, definitely icing on the cake. But nothing could top that magical moment when time stood still... when Christmas came early.
