Story Winner #3: Secrets in the Closet
My parents had secrets.
One December day, a long time ago, when I was five or six years old, my little brother, Chippy, and I were playing hide-and-seek. I decided to hide in the large, upstairs, walk-in closet. He would never find me! I left the closet door slightly ajar so it wouldn't be pitch-black in there, and I brushed my way through the coats and suits to the rear of the deep, narrow chamber. To my amazement, stacks of boxes and bags I had never before seen filled the area behind the hanging clothes.
Even in the closet gloom, thanks to pictures on the boxes, I knew in a moment what I had found: My parents' secret Christmas stash.
I sat in the dark closet and plotted.
Later, when Chippy's nap time finally arrived, I set out to explore what was in the bags while my mother was safely downstairs preparing dinner.
I could just reach the chain dangling from the closet's ceiling light fixture. I turned on the light and closed the closet door. One by one, I went through the bags and very carefully replaced all items in exactly the same order in which I had found them. Now I knew what Chippy and I were getting for Christmas.
Still, I wasn't certain about something. Maybe Santa had delivered those boxes early for my parents to hide, or maybe Santa had slipped in early and hidden them himself in that closet. I had to find out.
So on Christmas Eve, I faked being sound asleep when my mother came upstairs to check. I listened for what seemed like hours as my parents went up and down the stairs, knowing they must be emptying the closet and carrying all our new toys downstairs. Maybe, just maybe, Santa was there, too. I was too excited – and too curious - to fall asleep.
When the upstairs-downstairs trips finally ceased, I waited for another several minutes and then crept out of bed and tiptoed to the head of the staircase where I could peek through the banisters down into our living room.
Sure enough! The Santa and Mrs. Claus I knew so well were decorating the tree and arranging the presents. There was no plump, little bearded man in a red suit helping them. Nor did I hear reindeer on the roof. It was cold on the stairs, and after a few more minutes watching, I went back to bed.
Something told me not to say anything to anyone. So my little brother continued to enjoy the magic of Santa, my parents continued to believe in my naiveté... and I kept my secret knowledge to myself!

About the Author:
Jane Blake Millar: I am a retired mathematics teacher living in Florida. I started digitally scrapping with Photoshop Elements less than two years ago, and I'm now learning Photoshop and Illustrator. I have all the family photos, some going back to the mid-1800s and am learning both editing and photo restoration. I have two sons, one daughter-in-law, and two grandsons, so I create many layouts featuring them. My other interests include fine art, travel, and creative writing.

1. What program do you use to digitally scrapbook?
Photoshop CS6 for the last couple of months, but if I'm in a hurry I still use Photoshop Elements 9.
2. Are you a Mac or a PC?
I'm a PC but dream about a Mac.
3. Tell us the make and model of digital camera that you use.
Sony Cyber-shot for the quick photos of people or events, Canon EOS 400D for nature photography.
4. Name one thing that every beginner digital scrapbooker should know.
Learn your software whichever it is. It gets so much easier to get the good looks you want when you know the functions of your program.
5. If you could be transformed into a digital scrapbooking embellishment, what would you choose and why?
Probably a ribbon because ribbons go with almost everything. They can be tied or loose, patterned or plain.
6. What time of day do you find that you do your best scrapbooking?
In the evenings just before bedtime, usually the only time I have for scrapping.
7. What is your favorite snack?
I'm a "godisgris" (candy pig) as we say in Swedish, and love most things that are sweet or salty, especially salty licorice.
8. What is your least favorite household chore?
All of them... but dusting is worse, that's when I consider getting rid of all my stuff...
9. Finish this sentence. "I couldn't live without..."
...paper and pen, I want to be able to put down my thoughts whenever I want.
10. What's your current favorite layout that you've done?
