Story Winner #1: Christmas Morning Surprise
Things were looking pretty bleak for Santa's visit to the Gray house in 1956. Mom and Dad had recently moved back to the sand hills of Nebraska to raise us in the Midwest. Short on money during those lean years, they rented an old farm house and bought a couple of milk cows with a dream to expand in a few years.
However, our sixth sibling was still-born in the fall and the winter proved to be drafty in the big old house. Mumps and measles made several visits, and all of us spent weeks sleeping downstairs by the coal stove in our tiny living room. Mom and Dad decided no more winters for little kids in that cold farm house, so we moved to an old stucco place in town. Daily, we made the trip back and forth to the farm, six miles out, to milk the cows, fix fences, feed chickens, and tend our vegetable garden.
With all of us under nine years of age, Mom was busy canning, cooking, mending – surviving. Doctor and hospital bills went unpaid. Only one door remained on the old Jeep, so we bundled up as if we were going for sleigh rides. As winter set in, we were aware that Santa probably wouldn't be leaving much for the little Grays.
Imagine our surprise and delight on Christmas morning when we descended the stairs to find huge (to us) and beautiful bride dolls for my sisters and me. Mom was crying, and I couldn't understand why she would cry when we were so happy. She explained they were "tears of joy."

VaReane and her sisters with their bride dolls, Christmas 1956
It was several years later when I found out that my aunts had purchased the dolls for us, plus a toy car garage for my brother. These dear ladies knew how much their gifts would be appreciated by our parents as well as the recipients.
We loved those dolls and took special care of them. Three years ago, I gave my doll to my granddaughters and told them this Christmas story of caring and generosity.
