Want - Need - Surprise - Read
One Christmas morning quite a few years and several kids ago, we found ourselves discouraged and overwhelmed. After the presents had all been opened and the copious amount of wrapping paper had been crumpled up and stuffed into a bulging garbage bag, we looked around at the excessive number of gifts that had just been dumped in our kids' laps and realized how far we had wandered from what we wanted Christmas to be about in our home. It was time for a change.
We discussed ways we could revise the practice of gift giving in our home. We wanted to keep the magic and excitement of Christmas morning alive for our kids without creating little monsters who expected piles of presents every December 25th. We still wanted presents under the tree, just not so many! We thought that a good solution would be to do our very best to give each of them the one thing they wanted more than anything else. We wanted to go for quality rather than quantity.
Then a few non-urgent needs arose. Things like the kids growing out of their church shoes or running out of school supplies opened up opportunities for us to provide those items for them but wrapped up with a bow on Christmas morning. We decided we would give each child one gift that they really needed.
So we set out to give each of our kids one thing they wanted and one thing they needed. But inevitably, while out shopping we would see something we just knew one of the kids would be ecstatic to receive as a gift but that they hadn't thought to ask for. We wanted to keep an element of intrigue and anticipation alive on Christmas morning. We decided to round out our Christmas gift giving with one surprise gift for each child.
As the kids have gotten a little older, we've been thrilled to see them all grow into enthusiastic readers. It seems that they're each constantly on the watch for new books to be published in their favorite series or genre. So to encourage their continued enjoyment of such a great pastime, the kids will always find a new book wrapped and waiting for them under the tree.
Christmas morning has been significantly more meaningful and exciting since establishing our Christmas gift-giving tradition. The whole holiday season is less stressful and more enjoyable as we shop with our gift-giving formula in place. Everyone receives a want, a need, a surprise, and a read. For our family, it's been the perfect solution for eliminating excess while maintaining the fun of and magic of opening gifts on Christmas morning.

Favorite Product I've Designed:

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Gift Bows
I love wrapping presents and especially enjoy adding ribbons and bows to fancy up my wrap job. I felt like my holiday layouts needed that same fun, fancy touch so I designed the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Gift Bows to fill that need. I love to recolor them to match whatever wrapping paper colors are featured in the photos on my layouts.

7th Annual Cookie Recipe Card Exchange
It's time for our 7th Annual Cookie Recipe Card Exchange - and you're invited! We have a special, free recipe card template to help you get started. We love cookies, and we love getting new cookie recipes to try, so this year, all participants will receive a sweet little Scrap Girls Boutique gift just for joining in.
Here's how to join in the fun:
Design a 4x6-inch recipe card (at 300 dpi) using mostly Scrap Girls products. Use one of your favorite holiday cookie, candy, or sweet treat recipes - something "tried and true" is preferred.
All skill levels are encouraged to participate! If this is your very first time to try your hand at digital scrapbooking or if you're a pro, please join in the fun!
When you design your card, avoid putting any text within 1/4 inch of the edges. Anything close to the edges can get cut off when the card is printed.
Place your name or Scrap Girls Forum username somewhere on the recipe card (small text is fine).
Save your design as a JPG file, with a file name that includes your name or Scrap Girls Forum user name (for example, my file might be called aprilshowers_gingercrinkles.jpg.) We want to know who made what!
Attach your card to an email and send it to cookieexchange@scrapgirls.com. Please include your first and last name in the email. A confirmation will be emailed to each person who sends a recipe card so they know their card was received. Please allow 48 hours for confirmation.
Cards MUST be received by Midnight (ET) on Tuesday, December 11.
Unfortunately, if you don't send in a recipe card, you will not be able to get a copy of all the cards. No exceptions. Your recipe card is your ticket to all the fun!
We ask that you not post your recipe card in your Gallery, Facebook, or anywhere else until the swap is over. This way, we can all be surprised by the cards we get! You can post your own card in the Gallery or anywhere else any time after December 13.
Please don't sell or give away any of the finished cards on blogs, emails, etc. You may print some or all the recipe cards as a gift for someone you know personally, but wide-scale distribution or sale is not allowed, as per our commercial use terms, which can be read in full here.
You can submit more than one card, if you wish - the more the merrier!
On or before December 13, each participant will receive the links (via email - the same way that links come when you buy Scrap Girls products) to download the recipe card files.
