Make Your Layouts Work Overtime!
Created on a PC using Windows 7 and Photoshop Elements 8
When I asked our son what he wanted to do for his 15th birthday, he didn't go for the events he'd done before: A bowling party, a sleepover, or a meet-me-at-the-movies party.
Ryan surprised me by saying he wanted to have his party at a 103-year-old historic house in my hometown. Now, since most of you don't live near Wichita Falls, Texas, you likely don't know about the Kell House Museum. It's a step back in time. It's an architectural feast for the eyes of early 20th century craftsmanship and elegance. It's a house where every rug, drapery, light fixture, or piece of furniture has a story to tell. When you're there, it seems like the family has just stepped out for a moment and you're peeking into the heart of their home.
Ryan has visited this historic home every few years since he was a little guy, and I can't tell you the number of times he has said if it ever goes up for sale, he wants to buy it. (He better start selling some lemonade – a lot of lemonade – and fast!) In his spare time, he draws the house, its floor plans, and its furniture. To put it simply, he loves the Kell House. The idea of having his birthday party there really warmed my heart – it was as if he was creating a bit of his own history at the Kell House, intermingling his own timeline with that of the family who lived there 100 years ago.
Once we got the party calendared, I decided to email the invitations because time was short (isn't it always?). To make my job easier and to cut down on design decisions and endlessly pawing through all my digital folders (granted, it's fun, but time was of the essence), I used items from only one digital scrapbooking collection to cut down on the design decisions I would need to make. Everything would look great together – guaranteed!
I was drawn to the warm brown textures of Cherise Oleson's Inspiring Collection Biggie and the coordinating JIF Plus: 12x12 Inspirational. The only changes I made were to recolor a few buttons (the dark blue buttons), plus I clipped a slightly recolored paper to the doily embellishment.
Tip: Recoloring digital papers and embellishments is so easy – even a newbie like me can tackle this one! To recolor the button, for example, I clicked on the embellishment, then I clicked Enhance on the top menu line. Next, from the drop-down menu, I clicked Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation. I played around with the Hue slider until I got it in the blue family, then I moved the Saturation slider to make it a deeper color. Ta-da! Dark blue buttons that matched Ryan's shirt!
I wanted the invitation to do more than give the who-what-where-when of the party; I wanted the recipients to understand why we were having his party at the Kell House Museum. The layout gave me the space to explain his long-term fascination with it, as well as show some pictures of him touring the house as a child.
As soon as I clicked Send, I sat back and realized I loved the invitation layout so much, I ought to print it out and use put it in his scrapbook as-is. I definitely will, but then another thought hit me – why not revamp it just a little and use it as one of the layouts to chronicle the actual party? Why not indeed? The work was already done!
So that's what I did – I made this layout work overtime. With a little tweaking and pic-swapping, the layout now tells the story of the event itself. By the time I was finished, I had only added two extra embellishments (the metal washer with 2012 imprinted and the lined text frame in the lower left corner).
Look for ways to make your existing digital scrapbooking layouts do double-duty! By rearranging, rotating, and repurposing, you can get more mileage from every layout you create. You sure can't do that with traditional paper scrapping. Plus, using one digital scrapbooking collection for all the layouts for one event produces an overall cohesive look, while saving you both time and money!
One more tip: These three products can be purchased separately in the Boutique, but in October 2011, the Inspiring Collection was the Scrap Girls Club product of the month, so I received these three products – and more – for just $9.99. If you have limited hobby dollars – and don't we all? – then signing up for the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club is an amazing way to get a ridiculous number of products each month for a bargain. Plus, the club subscriptions come with extra Members Only products that will never appear in the Boutique, like the Jiffy Albums, which are among my favorite Scrap Girls products of all time!
