Art Journaling

What is Art Journaling? I asked the same question earlier this year when a friend was taking an Art Journaling Class. I had never heard of it and wondered what she meant. I searched online and found this definition of sorts:
"Art journaling is about the [creative process] of pulling together color, words and images as you wish on a page. Unlike many other forms of art, it is not about the outcome." -Tammy Garcia
Art Journaling is all about putting things on a page in a way that expresses a feeling or theme or idea in a way that makes YOU happy. There are no rules, but there are a couple of guidelines that most Art Journaling pages follow:
- Most pages use NO photos
- Many pages start with a quote or "prompt"
- Most pages use a variety of textures and techniques
Art Journaling is traditionally done on real pages, using real paint, text, crayons, pencils, and using real embellishments like glitter, fabric, leaves, texture paint, wool, collage, etc.
So how can we - as digital scrappers - create art journal pages?
Art Journaling allows you to use your digital supplies in new and different ways, so raid your digital scrapbooking stash and see what treasures are in there!
I like to start by building my background. I find it easiest to start with a paper that looks like the effect I am going for, then perhaps adding a blending template and adding another paper. Edgers are terrific for adding interest, and paint effects are also wonderful for backgrounds.
Once I have my base sorted, I like to think about the feel of my page. I tend to add word art now and extra visual interest... embellishments, other texture or color, styles, etc.
Finally, I will add journaling if I am using it, shadows, and extra finishing touches...
Contrary to my usual scrapping philosophy of "less is more," I find that with Art Journaling "too much is never enough." Be creative, add and take away until you are happy, and then post your layouts in the Scrap Girls Gallery for us to "ooh and ahh" over!

High Noon Crop

Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 12 Noon ET for the High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On November 14th, we'll do a favorite photo challenge! Create a layout showcasing a recently taken favorite photo!
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
November's Forum Game: Products Picks Game
This November, we are playing the Products Picks game where we encourage you to stroll through the aisles of the boutique and do a little window shopping.
Each Monday through Saturday in November, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post the name of one or two product designers in this Product Picks game thread. You will then head to the Scrap Girls Boutique and navigate to that particular designer's product pages. Choose any of their products (your favorite product, one you like, or one you wish you owned), then head over to the Product Picks game thread and share the product name, boutique link, and a brief explanation of why you chose that product.
At the end of the month, members who haves posted links to 41 products (one for each designer) will be entered in a drawing for one of three $10 Gift Certificates. Members who have posted links to 16-40 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $5 Gift Certificates. And members who have posted links to 10-15 products will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 Gift Certificates.
