Life with Dogs
I grew up having dogs. Lots of dogs, even though we usually only had one at a time. I can recall nine of them clearly: Dixie, Lady, Irish, Snoopy, Buffy, Tippy, Max, 'Lil Bit, and Tisha, though there might have been more. Some dogs we had for just a short time, and some we had for years. But there was never one that spent its entire natural life with us, from puppyhood to a natural end. We either had to give them away when we moved or they met a tragic end. I'll spare you the details, but I've had lot of heartache when it comes to parting with my dogs.
When I got married and had a couple of kids of my own, the earliest places we lived didn't allow dogs. Once we bought our first house, my husband and I decided that it was time that we brought a puppy into our home. He was a Husky mix, and we named him Kenai. We had him for two years when he started having seizures. Medication controlled his epilepsy for a few years, but by the time Kenai had been with us for five years, his seizures were frequent and so severe that the sad day came when we made the decision to put him down. We were devastated. I recalled my childhood and wondered if having and loving a dog was worth it. Would my history with dogs repeat itself with my children?
We decided that we'd wait and see, but I think we all sensed that empty hole in our family. I especially felt it as a stay-at-home mom, being alone in the house during the day when my husband was at work and the kids were at school. After a few months, I started looking at the newspaper for puppies. We found a sweet, merry Springer Spaniel puppy, and we named him Bullet.
Bullet broke the cycle for me. He's been with us for 14 years. He's been my constant companion and the dog my kids have been able to grow up with. But now, after all this time, I'm facing it again. Bullet is feeling his age. He has to be helped or carried up and down the stairs. We have wood floors, and often he'll slip on them and can't get back up on his own. He's lumpy, bumpy, and a little smelly. (He's too old to risk anesthesia to have lumps removed or his teeth properly cleaned.) But he's still our sweet, merry Springer Spaniel. And I've decided, yes, having and loving a dog is worth it!
