Using August's Scrap Girls Club

My favorite day of the month is the first. Why? Because it's Scrap Girls Club day! I always love the surprise of discovering who created the club, what the topic was, and what color scheme will greet me. This month features the talented Jan Ransley and her topic of Home Sweet Home.
This club had so many lovely-patterned papers that I wanted to feature several of them on my page. Have you ever been intimidated by using several colors and patterns on the same page? Here is just one way to successfully pull it off!
First, I selected the Rectangular Marquee Tool. In the Options bar up top, I chose Style/Fixed size and inserted 3 inches by 3 inches in the box. Then I clicked in the center area of the 12x12-inch blank document. I filled in the "marching ants" with the Paint Bucket Tool (the color doesn't matter). Next, I switched to the Move Tool and placed the 3x3-inch square in the upper left corner.
I filled in the entire layout by duplicating and moving the square. Here's a great tip to save you some time: Hold the Alt key while left-clicking and dragging on the square. It will automatically duplicate the layer. Once I have a whole row done (I changed the color of every other square for demonstration purposes), I can Shift+click on all those squares, then press the Alt button and click-and-drag that duplicated row down to the next row.
When the whole document is filled in this manner, it's time to choose your favorite papers to fill in the grid. In my case, I'm going to emulate a quilt. Use the 3x3-inch squares as masks, placing your digital paper on top of the mask layer. Then with the paper layer active, press Ctrl+Alt+G (or Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements) and "clip" your paper to the shape below. Here is my finished quilt background. (I added stitching.)
Jan's club can be used for a wide variety of photographs. For my layout today, I chose to focus on the old sewing machine embellishment. Most of my ancestors sewed all their clothing on such machines. A quick scan through my heritage photos yielded a wonderful photo of my mother in her graduation dress she sewed for herself.

High Noon Crop
Wednesday, August 15th - 12 Noon EDT
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 12 Noon EDT for the High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On August 15th, we'll do a multiple photo challenge! Create a layout on any theme, any topic, and any colors - using five or more photos!
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
Heritage Crop
Thursday, August 16th - 8:00 PM EDT
Do you have boxes of heritage photos just waiting to be restored and scrapped? Are there family stories just waiting for you to write down and preserve? Then this is the crop for you! Join Carla (CRS) at 8pm for the Heritage Crop and Chat! This month, we'll share ideas on how we can use the Serenity Collection with our photos. We'll help you get motivated to scrap those heritage photos and record your family stories for future generations to enjoy.
August's Forum Game: BINGO
Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Forum username" by Wednesday August 1st (Midnight EDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Thursday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
