5 Simple Steps to a Great Layout
Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 9.0 with Windows Vista
Digital scrapbooking is simple, right? All you have to do is drag a digital paper and photos onto a blank canvas and you're done, right? So what's all the fuss about? Why do we need all these tutorials, tips, and tricks to create digital scrapbook pages? Well, it's because it really is the tiny details that make the BIG difference in making digital scrapbook layouts look great.
Below is a good, simple layout; it has all the characteristics of a digital scrapbooking page - a digital paper, a photo, word art, embellishments, and it even has the date. I could easily print this out and be done. However, I really want to take it further and make it more meaningful and enjoyable. Let me show you five simple steps I will take to make this good layout look great.
Step 1: Cropping
Take a look at your photos; usually there are unwanted or distracting images in the backgrounds. If so, crop them out. You want your photo to be your main focus and the people in that photo to take center stage.
Step 2: Grouping
Take a look at your layout. Are the embellishments and photos scattered around the page? If so, decide on a focal point (usually a photo). Keep your focal point larger and bring your embellishments together and cluster them in an eye-pleasing way. Grouping keeps your eyes focused and creates an attractive flow for your layout.
Step 3: Add Layers
Layering papers, adding a frame and even supporting brush work can give your layouts contrast and bring them more to life.
Step 4: Add Shadows
I love shadows! My pages never feel "finished" without them. Shadows can help make your layouts look more vibrant. I almost always use a shadow style on my pages because they are fast and easy to use. If you don't have any, check them out in the Boutique.
Step 5: Add Journaling
The key to a long-lasting, memorable layout is the journaling. Journaling can be simple or long and heartfelt. Document why the photo was taken; there is a reason behind every photo, and if we don't put a story behind it, the meaning will be lost.
And there you go! Five simple steps to think about when you really want to turn a good layout into a great layout!

Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
