We Didn't Always Sound this Smart – Cindy Dake
If you are a faithful Scrap Girls Newsletter reader, you might have noticed that we generally do a pretty good job of getting our punctuation in the right place and using “your” and “you're” properly. You might have been thinking all this time that we are just lucky to have so many great writers on our staff, but the truth of the matter is that we get a lot of help – from our wonderful editor, Cindy Dake.
Cindy has loved words from a young age, and by the time she started college, she knew she wanted to study journalism. After earning her Bachelor's degree in Journalism, she capped it off with a Master's degree in Communications. This led to a whirlwind career in journalism, where she worked mostly with printed media, but also with radio and television. A six-year stint as a magazine editor honed her editing skills even more.
When Cindy and her husband adopted their son in 1998, she decided to transition to freelance editing to be able to work from home. When she's not editing for Scrap Girls, you'll find her at work on Texas Baptist publications, as well as volunteering her time to produce newsletters for a local organization.
A long-time paper scrapper, Cindy had just begun to dabble with digital scrapbooking when she heard about Scrap Girls via a Facebook friend from college. She signed up for the newsletter and tried out some of our famous freebies using Microsoft Publisher, the only graphics program she had ever played with. When an ad for an editor appeared in the Scrap Girls Newsletter, Cindy was confident in her editing skills, but pretty unsure of her digital scrapbooking talents. However, she did some praying and decided to apply, and the rest is history.
In the two-and-a-half years of being on the Scrap Girls team, she's realized just how much she has to learn about digital scrapbooking because she reads every single article and tutorial many times over! This is, in fact, her favorite thing about being the Scrap Girls editor – the knowledge acquisition and general fun that it has brought to her life.
Besides being an expert in written words, Cindy is also proficient in sign language, which she learned in order to communicate with her hearing-impaired son. This led to her decision to homeschool him, which has created an amazing point of connection between them. With Cindy's support and the help of cochlear implants, he has made great strides and now communicates entirely verbally. Cindy appreciates that the Scrap Girls Forum is a great place to find advice and support from others moms who are homeschoolers, as well as interact with scrapbookers from all over the world.

Journaling Crop

New Member Chat

Join Debbie (B&K Mom) for the New Member Chat at 8pm in the Live Chat room lobby. This is a great place to ask questions about getting around the Scrap Girls site or about digital scrapbooking in general - and a great place to make some new friends. High Noon Crop
Wednesday, August 15th - 12 Noon EDT
Join April (April Showers) each Wednesday at 12 Noon EDT for the High Noon Crop. All coasts and time zones are welcome! These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week.
On August 15th, we'll do a multiple photo challenge! Create a layout on any theme, any topic, and any colors - using five or more photos!
Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you! Hope to see you in the chat room!
August's Forum Game: BINGO
Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Forum username" by Wednesday August 1st (Midnight EDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Thursday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.
Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

August Monthly Layout Contest: Summer vacation time! We'd love to see your layouts featuring your summer vacations! Have you gone on the trip of a lifetime? Or an annual trip with family or friends? Have you had a fun staycation right in your own town? We'd love to get a glimpse into how you spend your vacation and why you chose spend your time that way! Post your layouts in the August Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight EDT on August 31st and you could one of the two people who will win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
