Resizing an ECard for Facebook's Photo Parameters
Tutorial created in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 on a PC using Windows 7
If necessity is the mother of invention, then frustration is surely the cousin of do-overs. Such was the case earlier this summer. My little Father's Day project for my husband pushed me to make a discovery that helped me get a handle on how to send an eCard to my Facebook friends quickly and easily – and sized just right.
It was the day before Father's Day, and as usual, I was running a little late on getting my husband's Father's Day goodies in order. (A little late? I had done nothing toward honoring him for all he does to keep this family afloat. I'll spare you the excuses.)
My friend, Annette, showed me what she had made for her hubby for Father's Day. She had purchased three big letters at a craft store – D, A, D – and then took pics of her three kids, each holding one letter. She inserted the pictures in a long, rectangular frame that featured a matte with three openings, thus D-A-D was spelled out in the frames. It was adorable. I had frame envy.
Sensing my gift dilemma, she insisted that I use the letters and take photos of my son, too. (What are friends for, if not for saving your hide with a dash of creativity!) I have one child, not three, so I took three pics of my son holding the letters. I wanted to simulate the matte with three openings so I used a frame with three openings from Reflections of the Heart Collection Biggie by Jen Reed.
Then I clustered "manly" embellishments around the left side and lower right corner, using digital embellishments from RetroActive Brothers Collection Mini, Rustique Collection Biggie, Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Butterfly Effect. I grabbed a nice neutral background paper from Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Follow Your Bliss that gave a little texture without overpowering the layout.
My plan was only to print it out and insert it in a frame (no matte needed!), but on a whim, I decided to post it to my husband's Facebook profile as a surprise eCard that he would discover on Father's Day, plus it would declare to the wide-waiting-world that he's a great dad.
But when I uploaded it, I was expecting it to be just as perfect as it looked on my PSE screen, but uh-oh, I hadn't taken into consideration that Facebook's photo window isn't a typical size. Here's how it came out looking...
The top of the image was lopped off! If one of my friends happened to click on it, they would see the complete image, but the full effect of seeing it perfectly displayed on his wall was lost. Most of the time, this probably wouldn't bother me, but this time, I decided to be a perfectionist.
That set me on a mission: To figure out how to post an eCard/photo on Facebook that would fit perfectly in the window. First, I realized that I'd created a rectangular layout, but if I'd created a square, say a typical 12x12-inch layout, then it would have fit in the square Facebook photo "window."
Yes, it was as simple as that. I just needed my document size to be a square rather than a rectangle. Whether it's a 12x12 or an 8x8 or somewhere in-between, a square is a square is a square. So I did a quick re-do, creating the image as a square with a resolution of 300. I had to rearrange my layout just a little, and this is what I came up with and how it looked on my husband's Facebook profile:
Yes, indeed, this is how I wanted it to look in the first place!
Now I can use this new understanding of how to make Facebook-sized eCards to greater benefit, like this "welcome your new baby" eCard which I posted to my friend's profile:
Now I feel empowered to make Facebook eCards for birthdays, babies, and any other event that comes along! And as long as it's a square, it's going to be a perfect fit.
